Modi constitutes Economic Advisory Council (EAC) : Highlights

3 years after coming to power, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set up a 5 member panel of economic advisors to help his government analyse and advise on key issues. The Economic Advisory Council  to Prime Minister (EAC-PM) is an independent body to give advice on economic and related issues to the Government of India, specifically to the Prime Minister. With the economy hitting a rough patch in recent months, Modi has decided to reconstitute the EAC-PM that had been rendered defunct after the previous UPA government demitted office in May 2014. The five-member council consists of economists of high repute and eminence.

Headed of EAC : Bibek Debroy (NITI Aayog Member)

Members :
  • Ratan Watal (Principal Advisor)
  • Surjit Bhalla (Member)
  • Rathin Roy (Part-time Member)
  • Ashima Goyal (Part-time Member)
Tasks of EAC-PM :
  • To address issues of macroeconomic importance and presenting views to the prime minister.
  • Not only economy related, the committee will analyse any issue, economic or otherwise, referred to it by the prime minister and advise him thereon.
  • Will attend any other task as desired by the prime minister from time to time.
The last chairperson of the Council, when Manmohan Singh was the Prime Minister, was former Reserve Bank of India Governor C. Rangarajan.
