Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "A formal break: on Sasikala's ouster"
  • Formal - following the correct or suitable official methods
  • Ouster - the removal of someone from an official position
  • Polarising - to cause something, especially something that contains different people or opinions, to divide into two completely opposing groups
  • Interim - temporary
  • Evoking - to bring a particular emotion, idea, or memory into your mind
  • Loyalty - support that you always give to someone or something because of your feelings of duty and love towards them
  • Precondition - something that must happen or be done before something else can happen
  • Faction - something that must happen or be done before something else can happen
  • Merger - the process of combining two companies or organizations to form a bigger one
  • Reclaim -  to get something back that someone has taken from you
  • Desire - a strong feeling of wanting to have or to do something
  • Immaterial - not important or relevant
  • Consequence - a result or effect of something
  • Council -  an official group of people who have been chosen to make decisions or provide advice
  • Legitimacy - the fact that something is legal
  • Isolation -  the state of being separated from other people, or a situation in which you do not have the support of other people
  • Clan - a big family
  • Sympathise -  to behave in a kind way and show that you understand someone’s problems
  • Gratitude - a feeling of being grateful to someone because they have given you something or have done something for you
  • Abolition - the official end to a law, system, practice etc
  • Resistant - not harmed or affected by something
  • Overt - not hidden or secret
  • Hesitant - doing something slowly or pausing before you do it, because you are nervous, embarrassed, or worried
  • Breakaway - consisting of people who have decided to separate from a larger group
  • Disqualify - to not allow someone to do something because they have committed an offence
  • Defection - to leave a country, political party, or organization and go to another one
  • Accentuate - to emphasize something, or to make it more noticeable
  • Reconciliation - a new and friendly relationship with someone who you argued with or fought with
  • Expel -  to officially force someone to leave a place or organization because of their bad behaviour
  • Inaction - the failure to do anything, especially when you should do something
  • Notwithstanding - despite something
  • Patching up -  to become friends with someone again after a disagreement
  • Unravel - if a process or project unravels, it begins to fail

  • Regime - a government that controls a country, especially in a strict or unfair way
  • Repression - the use of force or violence to control people
  • Fragile - easy to break or damage
  • Crackdown - strong action that someone in authority takes to stop a particular activity
  • Criminalisation - the action of turning an activity into a criminal offence by making it illegal
  • Opposition - strong disagreement with a plan or policy, especially when this is shown in active attempts to prevent something
  • Regression - a return to a previous or less developed state
  • Genocide - the murder of large numbers of people belonging to a particular race
  • Prosperity - the situation of being successful and having a lot of money
  • Boom - a sudden major increase in trade, profits etc in a particular country or region
  • Garment - a piece of clothing (this word is used especially when talking about the production and sale of clothes)
  • Can ill afford something - used for saying that someone should definitely not do something because it will cause problems
  • Unrest - angry or violent behaviour by people who are protesting against something
  • Democracy - a system of government in which people vote in elections to choose the people who will govern them
  • Democrat - someone who supports democracy as a political system
  • Autocratic - ruling with complete power
  • Tendency - an aspect of your character that you show by behaving in a particular way
  • Pronounced - very obvious or noticeable
  • Detention - the state of being kept in a police station or prison and not being allowed to leave
  • Treason - the crime of helping your country’s enemies or of trying to destroy your country’s government
  • Circumstance - conditions that make a bad action or mistake seem less serious, sometimes even making it seem reasonable
  • Promulgate -  to make an idea or belief known to as many people as possible
  • Convict - someone who is in prison because they are guilty of a crime
  • Tenure -  the period of time during which someone has an important job or is an elected official
  • Dictator - someone who uses force to take and keep power in a country
  • Intent - the intention to do something
  • Significant - very large or noticeable
  • Retain - to keep someone or something
  • Conceal - to hide something
  • Instinct - the way people or animals naturally react or behave, without having to think or learn about it
  • Ruthless - willing to make other people suffer so that you can achieve your aims
  • Threaten - to tell someone that you might or you will cause them harm, especially in order to make them do something
  • Veteran - someone who has a lot of experience doing a particular activity
  • Exile - a situation in which you are forced to live in a foreign country because you cannot live in your own country, usually for political reasons
  • Extract - to remove something from a particular place
  • Concession - something you give or allow to someone in order to reach an agreement
  • Protracted - continuing for a long time, especially longer than is normal or necessary
  • Crisis - a time of great disagreement, confusion, or suffering
  • Allusion - a statement that refers to something in an indirect way
  • Desperation - the worry and anger that someone feels because they do not know how to deal with a bad situation
  • Dispensation - official permission to do something that people are not normally allowed to do
  • Turmoil - a state of excitement or uncontrolled activity
  • Turnaround - an important change in a situation that causes it to improve
  • Dramatic - sudden and surprising or easy to notice
  • Bilateral - involving two groups or countries
  • Rivalry - a situation in which people, teams, businesses etc compete with one another
  • Evade - to avoid accepting or dealing with something that you should do
  • Accountability - a situation in which people know who is responsible for something and can ask them to explain its state or quality
  • Underscoring - to emphasize something
  • Diplomacy -  the profession or skill of preserving or creating friendly relationships between countries
  • Alter - to change something
  • Sustained - continuing at the same level or rate for a long time
  • Precariously - in a way that is not securely in position and is likely to change or become dangerous without warning
