International Current Affairs
- Today (30th September) is International Translation Day.
- The observance of this day seeks to recognize contribution of unsung heroes behind international diplomacy who work as language professionals to facilitate dialogue and contribute to development and strengthens world peace and security.

- Saudi Arabia today voted to allow women to issue fatwas.
- The move was approved by 107 votes, ending 45 years of only men being allowed to issue the legal pronouncements in the kingdom.
- Important Noe : The ruling comes just days after Saudi Arabia lifted a ban on women's driving.
- The 3rd India International Science Festival (IISF-2017) will be held in Chennai, Tamil Nadu from 13th to 16th 2017.
- This is the third IIS festival, which has been organised since the NDA government came to power in 2014.
- The first two were held at IIT-Delhi and National Physical Laboratory, Delhi.
- Objective of IISF 2017 : To instil scientific temper among masses and showcase India’s contribution in field of science and technology over years. Top scientists from government are expected to participate in four-day festival at IIT-Chennai.
- Aim of IISF 2017 : To build strategy for rural India through advancement of Science & Technology.
- The event will be jointly inaugurated by science and technology ministers of Nepal, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Portugal.
- The festival will have a thematic session on 'Deep Ocean Research', a science teachers workshop focusing on the Northeast, a science film festival, industry academia interactions and summits on grassroot innovators and start-ups.
- The organisers will also attempt a Guinness World Record by holding a "largest biology class" of 1000 students.
- India is going to host International Solar Alliance summit in December 2017.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi established the ISA at 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference, 21st Conference of the Parties (COP 21).
- Festival of Vijayadashmi or Dussehra being celebrated throughout the country today.
- A day after the rush hour stampede at Mumbai's Elphinstone Station, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal today announced that foot overbridges will be made mandatory at all train stations in Mumbai.
- He added that CCTV cameras will be installed with a monitoring mechanism in all suburban trains in Mumbai within the next 15 months.
Deaths
- Padma Shri awardee actor Tom Alter (67) passed away today.
- Alter, born to American parents in Mussoorie, had won a gold medal in acting from Pune's Film and Television Institute of India.
- He acted in over 300 TV shows and movies, like Veer-Zaara and Junoon, and was also a sports journalist.
- He took Sachin Tendulkar's first TV interview in 1989, when the cricketer was a 15-year-old and was yet to make his international debut.
- Eminent journalist and writer of Assam, Radhika Mohan Bhagawati (84) passed away today.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- According to a report by global brokerage Morgan Stanley, India would grow to be a $6 trillion economy, the third largest in the world, and achieve upper-middle income status in the next 10 years.
- The report added that India's digitisation drive would provide a boost of 50 to 75 basis points to its GDP growth in the next decade.
- Government has extended the deadline for sale of pre-GST goods with stickers of revised rates by three months to December 31.
- Note : Earlier, the government had allowed use of stickers with revised rates for packaged items till September 30.
MOUs & Agreements
- Domestic telecom equipment provider Vihaan Networks Limited (VNL) signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian state-owned telecommunications company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to launch an integrated disaster response solution Relief 123 service to provide disaster management in India.
- Relief 123 service has been designed and manufactured by VNL.
- BSNL will provide backhaul connectivity to it.
New Appointments
- President Ram Nath Kovind today appointed new Governors for Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Meghalaya and Lieutenant Governor in Andaman Nicobar. They are :
- Tamil Nadu : Banwarilal Purohit
- Arunachal Pradesh : Brigadier BD Mishra (retd)
- Meghalaya : Ganga Prasad
- Assam : Jagdish Mukhi
- Bihar : Satyapal Malik
- Andaman and Nicobar : Admiral DK Joshi
- Rajni Kant Mishra today took over as Director General, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).
- He has replaced Smt. Archana Ramasundaram.
- Senior IPS officer Sulkhan Singh gets three-month extension as Director General of UP Police.
