  • Ruling - a decision
  • Retardation - slow development, or development that is slower than it should be
  • Due - according to the usual standards or rules
  • Restraint - an act of limiting or controlling something
  • Decline - to say politely that you will not accept something or do something
  • Provision - a part of an agreement or law that deals with a particular problem
  • Offence - a crime or illegal activity for which there is a punishment

  • Vulnerable - someone who is vulnerable is weak or easy to hurt physically or mentally
  • Notion - knowledge or understanding of something
  • Remit - a particular area of work that someone is responsible for
  • Domain - an area of activity considered as belonging to or controlled by a particular person or group
  • Competence - a person’s range of skills or knowledge
  • Statutory - controlled by a law
  • Enact - to make a proposal into a law
  • Conferment - the act of giving an official title, honour, or advantage to someone
  • Cerebral palsy - a medical condition affecting someone’s control over their movement and speech, usually caused by damage to their brain before or during birth
  • Congenial - friendly and enjoying the company of others
  • Mandate - an official order to do something
  • Trial - the process of examining a case in a court of law and deciding whether someone is guilty or innocent
  • Take something into account - to consider something when you are trying to make a decision
  • Fateful - a fateful action, event, or time is one that has an important and usually bad effect on what happens in the future
  • Accused - a specific person that is accused of a crime in a court of law
  • Proceedings - the actions taken, usually in court, to settle a legal matter
  • Implication - a possible effect or result
  • Onus - if the onus is on someone to do something, it is their responsibility or duty to do it
  • Derail - to prevent something from continuing in the way that it was planned
  • Victim - someone who has been harmed, injured, or killed as the result of a crime
  • Gesture - a movement that communicates a feeling or instruction
  • Inadequate - not enough, or not good enough for a particular purpose
  • Testify - to make a statement about something that you saw, know, or experienced, usually in a court of law
  • Executive - the part of government that makes certain that laws are being used as planned
  • Overreach - to try to do more than your ability, authority, or money will allow
  • Ire - anger
  • Waging - to start and to continue a war or a fight
  • Relentless - something bad that is relentless never seems to stop or improve
  • Democratic - based on the principle that all people are equal and should be able to share in making decisions
  • Curb - to control or limit something
  • Categorically - in a very clear and definite way
  • Ally -  someone who is ready to help you, especially against someone else who is causing problems for you
  • Vetoed - to officially refuse to approve or allow something
  • Militate against something - to make something more difficult to do or less likely to happen
  • Controversial - a controversial subject, opinion, or decision is one that people disagree about or do not approve of
  • Empower -  to give someone more control over their life or more power to do something
  • Initiate - to make something start
  • Unpopular - disliked by many people
  • Adjudicate - to make an official decision about a problem or disagreement
  • Overhaul - to completely change a system in order to make it work more effectively
  • Remnant - a small remaining part of something
  • Prosperity - the situation of being successful and having a lot of money
  • Accession - the occasion when a country formally joins a group of countries or accepts an agreement
  • Accustomed to something - to think/start to think that something is normal or natural because you have experienced it regularly over a period of time
  • Arbitrary - used about actions that are considered to be unfair
  • Encroachment - the act of gradually taking away someone else's rights, or taking control of someone's time, work, etc
  • Regressive - relating to behaviour that is not responsible or controlled
  • Abortion / Termination - a medical operation in which a developing baby is removed from a woman’s body so that it is not born alive
  • Regardless - without being affected or influenced by someone or something
  • Circumstance - a fact or condition that affects a situation
  • Outrage - a strong feeling of anger and shock at something that you feel is wrong or unfair
  • Reform - a change that is intended to correct a situation that is wrong or unfair, or make a system work more effectively
  • Protest - something such as a meeting or public statement by people who strongly disagree with a policy, law etc
  • Regime - a system or form of government
  • Poster child - someone or something that represents a particular quality, idea, or activity
  • Clampdown - a determined attempt by someone in authority to stop people doing something bad or illegal
  • Thriving - very successful
  • Sovereignty - the right to rule a country
  • Dismal - very bad
  • Accountability - a situation in which people know who is responsible for something and can ask them to explain its state or quality
  • Exerting -  to use influence, authority, or power in order to affect or achieve something
  • Diplomatic - to deal with people in a sensitive way that does not upset or offend them
  • Pulpit - the place where a priest stands to talk to people in a church
  • Stitching up - to arrange an agreement or deal
  • Pragmatic - involving or emphasizing practical results rather than theories and ideas
  • Imperative - something that is very important and urgent
  • Robust - strong and successful
  • Accountable - completely responsible
