Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Coal comeuppance: on coal block allocation case"

  • Comeuppance - punishment that someone deserves for having done something wrong or unfair
  • Allocation - the process of deciding to give an amount or share of something to someone
  • Benchmark - an amount, level, standard etc that you can use for judging how good or bad other things are
  • Prosecution - the process or act of accusing someone of a crime and asking a court of law to judge them
  • Arguably - used for stating your opinion or belief, especially when you think other people may disagree
  • Consequence - a result or effect of something
  • Arbitrary - not based on any particular plan, or not done for any particular reason
  • Conviction - a decision by a court of law that someone is guilty of a crime
  • Liability - legal responsibility for causing damage or injury, or for paying something
  • Trial - the process of examining a case in a court of law and deciding whether someone is guilty or innocent
  • Deceive - to trick someone by behaving in a dishonest way
  • Transparency - an honest way of doing things that allows other people to know exactly what you are doing
  • Apex - the most important or successful part of something
  • Abusing - to use something in a bad, dishonest, or harmful way
  • Procure - to obtain something, especially with effort or difficulty
  • Sundry - several different; various
  • Manipulate -  to influence someone, or to control something, in a clever or dishonest way
  • Deliberately - intentionally
  • Ineligible - prevented by official rules from doing something
  • The accused - the person who is on trial in a law court
  • Arbitrarily - based on chance rather than being planned or based on reason
  • Discretion -  the right or ability to make a judgment or decision
  • Verdict - an official judgment made in a court
  • Indictment - something that shows how bad or wrong something is
  • Defence - actions that you take to protect someone or something that is being attacked
  • Adhered to something - to continue to obey a rule or have a belief
  • Omission -  someone or something that has not been included, either deliberately or because someone forgot
  • Inter se - among or between themselves
  • Conspiracy - a secret plan by a group of people to do something bad or illegal, especially in politics
  • Significance -  the importance that something has because it affects other things
  • Verdict -  an official judgment made in a court

  • Emphatic - said or shown in a very strong clear way
  • Reformist - wanting to change and improve society or an institution
  • Agenda - a plan or aim that is kept secret
  • Resounding - very great
  • Moderation - opinions and actions, especially in politics, that are reasonable and not extreme
  • Endorsement - an occasion when someone gives official or public support to a particular person or thing
  • Polarise - to form two very different groups, opinions, or situations that are completely opposite to each other
  • Hardliners - people who are strict their your beliefs or opinions, and not willing to change them
  • Rally behind somebody - to join other people in order to support someone when they are having problems
  • Slammed - to criticize someone or something severely
  • Outreach - the practice of providing help and advice to people before they have to ask for it
  • Flung - to say something to someone that is intended to hurt them
  • Allegation - a statement that someone has done something wrong or illegal even though this has not been proved
  • Crackdown - strong action that someone in authority takes to stop a particular activity
  • Apparatus - the people and organizations involved in some aspect of government
  • Consensus - agreement among all the people involved
  • Assail -  to make someone feel worried or upset
  • Ethnic - relating to a group of people who have the same culture and traditions
  • Minority - a small number of people or things that are part of a larger group but different in some way from most of the group
  • Cleric - a leader of any religion
  • Spotlight - a situation in which you get a lot of public attention
  • Negotiation - the process of discussing something with someone in order to reach an agreement with them
  • Averse - to dislike or not enjoy something
  • Fell short of - to not reach a particular level or to fail to achieve something that you were trying to do
  • Clergy - the people who lead religious services, especially Christian priests
  • Reformist - wanting to change and improve society or an institution
  • Hardly - used for saying that something is almost not true or almost does not happen at all
  • Radical - new and very different from the usual way
  • Ayatollah - an important religious leader in Iran who often has political as well as religious influence
  • Resistance - refusal to accept something new such as a plan, idea, or change
  • Pursue - to follow a course of activity
  • Constraint - something that limits your freedom to do what you want
  • Sham - something that people pretend is good, serious, or honest but is really not
  • Dissent - strong disagreement, especially with what people in authority think or with what the majority of people think
  • Constructively - in a manner which is intended to be useful or helpful
  • Gradual - slowly by small amounts
