International Current Affairs
- The World Health Day, a global health awareness day, is being observed today (7th April 2016).
- This day is being observed under the sponsorship of the World Health Organization (WHO).
- This day is held to mark WHO's founding, and is seen as an opportunity by the organization to draw worldwide attention to a subject of major importance to global health each year.
- World Health Day 2017 Theme : “Depression: Let’s talk”.
- Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrives in New Delhi on a four-day visit.
- More than 20 agreements are set to be inked between India and Bangladesh during this visit.
- Modi and Hasina are scheduled to hold official talks on Sunday.
- Note : She is visiting India after seven years.
- Uruguay will become the first country in the world to allow pharmacies to sell recreational marijuana, starting July.
- Thailand's King Maha Vajiralongkorn today signed a new military-backed constitution that strengthens the army's grip over the government and puts the country on the path to polls in 2018, four years after the military seized control.
MOUs & Agreements
- India has inked a two billion dollar defence deal with Israel and the later will supply advanced medium-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems, designed to destroy hostile aircraft, missiles and drones.
- The deal comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Tel Aviv later this year in July.
- India has signed a joint statement with Russia takeover full operational control of Unit 1 of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP).
- It formally marks the full transition. The agreement was signed between representatives of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) and the ASE Group of Companies, a subsidiary of ROSATOM State Atomic Energy Corporation of Russia.
National Current Affairs
- PM Narendra Modi will reshuffle his Cabinet after the ongoing Parliament session.
- External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj might be replaced by Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje and BJP MP Om Prakash Mathur may take over as Rajasthan CM.
- Note : Both Finance and Defence Ministries are at present being held by Arun Jaitley.
- The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation has issued guidelines to all states, allowing transgenders to use public toilets of the gender of their choice.
- The circular, also sent to the Swachh Bharat Gramin Mission, calls for the community's participation in Swachhta drives, and to recruit transgender people to help promote sanitation around the country.
- Rajasthan government has imposed 10% surcharge on stamp duty for the conservation and propagation of cows in the state.
- The surcharge will be applicable on non-judicial instruments and will have a bearing on costs of making documents like property sale or lease deeds, rent agreements, mortgage etc.
- IIT-Kharagpur can induct the first batch of MBBS students in its medical college by 2020-21, the institute's Deputy Director Professor Sriman Kumar Bhattacharyya has announced today.
- The first phase of construction of the engineering institute's medical college will be done by June and the hospital will be operational from 2018.
- The Centre has sanctioned ₹150 crore to IIT-Kharagpur for the hospital.
- The Maharashtra Assembly today passed a bill to amend the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act to legalise bullock cart races in the state.
- The amendment is aimed at ensuring the preservation of native breeds of bulls.
- Important Note : Earlier, Tamil Nadu had passed a similar bill to overturn a Supreme Court-ordered ban on the bull-taming sport of Jallikattu.
Science & Technology
- Department of Science and Technology (DST) has launched Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) programme dealing with self-driven cars, autonomous unmanned vehicles and aircraft navigation systems.
- Rs. 3,000-crore has been has been conceived for it and it will first take root in some of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
Banking & Economic Affairs
- The tax department has given banks three more months till June 30 to obtain Permanent Account Number (PAN) or form-60 from all account holders.
- Following demonetisation, the government had issued a notification making it mandatory for bank savings account holders to provide PAN or Form-60 by February 28.
- Form-60 is a declaration form filed by an individual without PAN.
- The Rajya Sabha today passed the four legislations which will enable the rollout of Goods and Services Tax Bill by July 1.
- The four Bills are the Central GST Bill, the Integrated GST Bill, the Compensation Bill and the UT GST Bill.
- Note : The GST regime would absorb central excise, service tax, and other local levies.
- Ban on cash transactions in excess of ₹2 lakh will not be applicable to withdrawals from banks and post office savings accounts, the Income Tax department has announced today.
- Through the Finance Act 2017, the government had banned cash transactions of over ₹2 lakh, adding that a penalty of an equal amount would be levied.
- Iceland is set to become the first country in the world to neutralise gender pay gap.
- In this regard, a bill was introduced in Iceland’s parliament that makes mandatory for public and private businesses to prove they offer equal pay to employees.
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to slash clearance time for National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) in an attempt to enhance efficiency of the electronic payment system and add to customer convenience.
- This move will enhance the efficiency of the NEFT system and add to customer convenience.
Awards & Honors
- President Pranab Mukherjee has posthumously conferred Kirti Chakra, the second highest peacetime gallantry award on Lance Havildar Prem Bahadur Resmi Magar of Gorkha Rifles.
- He had eliminated four terrorists during an operation in Jammu and Kashmir in June 2016.
- The were64th National Film Awards announced today's afternoon.
- Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar has won best actor for Rustom.
- Malayalam Actress Surabhi Lakshmi won best actress for the film Minnaminungu (The Firefly).
- Best Feature Film went to Marathi film Kaasav (Turtle).
- Sonam Kapoor’s biographical thriller film Neerja, directed by Ram Madhvani, bagged the Best Hindi film for the year 2016.

New Appointments
- Engineering conglomerate Larsen & Toubro (L&T) today named SN Subrahmanyan as its new CEO with effect from July.
- Further, long-serving head AM Naik will move to a new position of non-executive Chairman.
- Indian bank has appointed Kishor Kharat as the new Managing Director and CEO of the bank.
Prior to this appointment, he was serving MD and CEO of IDBI Bank, which was replaced by Mahesh Kumar Jain.
Deaths
- Japanese engineer, Roland founder and pioneer of digital music Ikutaro Kakehashi (87) passed away today.
- He was best known for founding Roland Corporation in 1972 as well as his roles in the development of Roland drum machines and MIDI standard (Musical Instrument Digital Interface).
- He also had invented a series of drum machines and synthesisers such as the TR-808, TR-909 and TB-303 that were used by some of music’s biggest legends such as Prince, Kanye West, New Order, Dr Dre etc. since the mid-1970s.
Sports Current Affairs
- A team of Bollywood actors will compete against MPs in a T20 cricket match in Dharamsala on Saturday.
- This match is being held to raise awareness about tuberculosis.
- Actor Bobby Deol will lead the team of actors, while the MPs team will be captained by former BCCI President Anurag Thakur.
- India's Sports Minister, Vijay Goel, approved the appointment of two foreign coaches in the discipline of athletics.
- The appointments include a race walking and a 400-metre relay coach.
