International Current Affairs
  • Today (6th April) is International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.
    • This day was initiated by the United Nations (UN), to recognize the power of sport in promoting peace and erasing cultural barriers worldwide.
    • This day promotes healthy lifestyles and emphasizes the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) focus on giving as many people as possible access to sport.
  • Russian lawmakers have drafted a bill to bar children under 14 from using social media networks.
    • As per this draft, social network platforms will have to register new users only after they provide their passport data. 
  • Germany's Cabinet has approved a new bill on curbing hate comments and fake news on social media
    • The new rules would impose fines of up to €50 million (over ₹346 crore) on social networking sites that fail to swiftly remove illegal content. 
  • Malaysia has passed a law that offers stronger legal protections for children against sexual offenses but stops short of criminalising child marriages. 
    • Note : Under civil law and Islamic law, girls and boys under 18 can be married.

National Current Affairs
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made 56 foreign visits since taking the office in May 2014, the government informed the Parliament today.
    • After first visiting Bhutan in June 2014, Modi visited the US four times, and Nepal, Japan, Russia, Afghanistan and China two times each, Minister of State for External Affairs VK Singh said.

  • The 2017 National conference on Communicating India was held in New Delhi
    • This conference was organized by the Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) in collaboration with the India Media Centre, University of Westminster, London, Nehru Memorial Museum and Library and Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) with the association of Prasar Bharati.
    • The three main themes of the conference were ‘Telling India’s story to the world’, ‘Communicating via Journalism’ and ‘Dialogue with Diaspora’.
  • The Keibul Lamjao National Park, located in the Loktak Lake in Manipur, India, is known as the only floating national park in the world.
  • The Madhya Pradesh government will start a one-year diploma course on Hindu priesthood called 'Purohityam’ from July this year. 
    • There will be no specifications on caste as both Scheduled Caste and Brahmins will be eligible for the course.
    • The basic qualification required by a person to apply for the course will be senior secondary.
  • The Lok Sabha today passed the amendments suggested by the Rajya Sabha in the Employees Compensation Bill
    • The bill provides for a compensation between ₹50,000-₹1 lakh for employees in case of an injury during an industrial accident. 
    • It also caters to occupational diseases and has a provision for a hefty penalty in case of violations by an employer.

MOUs & Agreements
  • The Union Cabinet chaired by PM Narendra Modi has approved the following MOUs / Agreements today :
    • Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Australia on cooperation in the field of health and medicine. 
      • The main areas of cooperation include communicable diseases such as malaria and TB, regulation of pharmaceuticals, vaccines and medical devices, mental health and non-communicable diseases, tobacco control, among others.
    • Collaborative Agreement with French National Research Agency (ANR), France
      • This MoU will be signed for supporting the Belmont Forum Secretariat from January, 2015 to December, 2017 at a total estimated expenditure of 40,000 Euros. 
    • MoU on Cooperation in the field of Mass Media between India and Bangladesh
    • Agreement on Audio Visual Co-Production India and Bangladesh

Banking & Economic Affairs
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has kept the repo rate unchanged at 6.25% in its first bi-monthly monetary policy of this fiscal today. 
    • This is the third time in a row that the repo rate has been kept unchanged.
    • The reverse repo rate however, has been raised from 5.75% to 6%. 
    • Further, RBI said GVA growth is projected to be 7.4% in 2017-18.
  • The Union Cabinet has approved setting up an independent regulator Rail Development Authority (RDA), that will recommend passenger fares for Indian Railways. 
    • Likely to be functional by August with an initial corpus of ₹50 crore, RDA will decide on tariffs, services for passengers and adoption of new technologies.
    • The Railways Ministry will take final call on passenger and freight fares.

Awards & Honors
  • Renowned playback singer, actor and music director S.P. Bala Subramanyam was today honored with the NTR National Film Award for the year 2012. 
    • Noted Bollywood actress Hema Malini was awarded the same award for the year 2013
  • Eleven Madison Park in New York has topped the 'World's 50 Best Restaurants' list.
    • 'Osteria Francescana' in Italy and 'El Celler de Can Roca' in Spain were ranked second and third respectively. 
    • The list was prepared by a panel of over 1,000 chefs, food writers and other experts from 26 geographical regions.

New Appointments
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Malvika Sinha as Executive Director (ED).
    • As Executive Director, Sinha will look after Foreign Exchange Department, Department of Government and Bank Accounts and Internal Debt Management Department. 
  • IT industry body Nasscom today appointed Quatrro CMD Raman Roy as its Chairman for 2017-18. 
    • Roy, who will assume the position from April 6, takes over from CP Gurnani, CEO of Tech Mahindra.
    • Note : Nasscom has also named Rishad Premji, Wipro Chief Strategy Officer and son of Azim Premji, as its Vice Chairman.
  • The Union Government has appointed Girish Shankar, Secretary of the Department of Heavy Industry as Chairman of newly constituted National Board of Electric Mobility (NBEM)

Deaths
  • Noted author and filmmaker Ajey Jhankar (67) passed away. 
    • He was known for his novels such as Sarkarnama and Drohpar
    • The movie ‘Singularity’ by filmmakar Roland Joffe was based on his novel ‘Drohparv’. 

Sports Current Affairs
  • The 10th edition of the Indian Premier League kicked off on Wednesday, with defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore in an encore of the last year's final at Hyderabad. 
    • BCCI felicitated former cricketers Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly at the opening ceremony. 
    • Bollywood actress Amy Jackson also performed on the occasion.
    • Defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad has won the first match of IPL 2017 by defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore by 35 runs. 
  • India's Rio Olympics silver medal-winning shuttler, PV Sindhu jumped three spots to reach her career-best ranking of world number two in the women's singles rankings today.
  • The Indian football team jumped 31 places to reach the 101st rank, its best in 20 years, in the latest FIFA rankings released today. 
    • India, ranked 11th in Asia, have won 11 of their last 13 matches, scoring 31 goals. 
  • Spinner Rashid Khan became the first cricketer from Afghanistan to play in an Indian Premier League match, after featuring for the Sunrisers Hyderabad against the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the season opener yesterday. 
  • Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq has announced he will retire from Test cricket after the completion of upcoming Test series against West Indies. 
    • The 42-year-old said he will continue to play cricket at domestic level alongside other cricket activities.
    • Misbah, who was made captain in 2010, guided Pakistan to achieve the number one spot in ICC Test rankings for the first time.
