  • On 3rd Feb 2017, Iran has banned US wrestlers from participating in the Freestyle World Cup competition slated from 16th of this month in the western city of Kermanshah. The action was in response to President Donald Trump's executive order forbidding visas for Iran, among seven Muslim countries. 
    • Note : The Freestyle World Cup held in Iran is one of the most prestigious competitions in all of international wrestling. After a gap of nearly 20 years, US freestyle wrestlers have been competing in the event since the 1998 Takhti Cup.
  • Japan's Olympic organising committee has mentioned that Olympic and Paralympic medals for the Tokyo 2020 Games will be made from recycled mobile phones. 
    • Note : The project hopes to promote sustainability and reduce costs. Members of gave the idea to the government officials and companies. 
  • India Under-19 hammered England Colts by seven wickets in the third One-dayer in Mumbai taking a 2- 1 lead in the five-match series. Having restricted England Under-19 to 215, India achieved the target in the 45th over, losing just three wickets in the process. 
  • Iran has lifted a ban on U.S. wrestlers after the discriminative restrictions on Iranian nationals traveling to the U.S. were suspend-ed by a U.S. federal judge.
  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has opposed the International Cricket Council's (ICC) new changes to the financial model and governance structure on 4th February 2017. 
    • Note : The BCCI has been one of the strongest opponents of changes to the financial model and governance structure. But despite the presence of a new CoA, their stance on the subject remains unchanged. 
  • India defeated Malaysia 2-0 to win the gold medal in the boy's team event at the Asian Junior Squash championship in Hong Kong. India's no.1 player Velavan Senthilkumar defeated second seed Malaysia's Ong Sai Hun. 
    • Note : Indian boys had won the title for the second time. Earlier, in 2011 they defeated arch-rivals Pakistan in Colombo. 
  • The Billiards and Snooker Federation of India (BSFI) informed that India will host the World Billiards Championship for the next four years. 
    • Note : In 2016, the World Billiards Championship was held in Bengaluru. In the prestigious tournament, Pankaj Advani won in the 150-UP for-mat beating Peter Gilchrist of Singapore.
  • The National Race Walking Championship to be staged in the Capital on February 18 and19 will offer Rs.4,00,000 as total prize for the 50 km, 20 km and 10 km races. 
    • Note : The national race walking championship will feature events for u-20 boys and girls apart from men and women. 
  • The official mascot of the tournament 'Kheleao' was unveiled in a ceremony at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi. A clouded leopard called Kheleao was introduced by Sports Minister Vijay Goel and All India Football Federation President Praful Patel. 
    • Note : The clouded leopard is an endangered wild cat whose habitat extends from the Himalayan foothills to mainland Southeast Asia. Kheleao will participate in numerous activities in the run-up to the first-ever FIFA tournament to be hosted by India.
  • The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Hockey Team has won the inter-ministry Hockey tournament 2016-17 at the Central Secretariat Ground Vinay Marg, New Delhi. I&B Team Defeated Ministry of Health by three goals. 
    • Note : All the Ministry teams participated in the race for the cup. Most entertaining player Chandan Singh was declared 'Player of the match'.
  • India beat Pakistan by 9-wickets to win T20 Blind World Cup at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium. India achieved the victory target of 198-runs in the 18th over in the final of the tournament. 
    • Note : Prakash Jayaramaiah was declared the Man-of-the-match. Man-of-the-series Badar Munir was the top-scorer for Pakistan. 
  • India cricket team beat Bangladesh by 208 runs to win the one-off test at Hyderabad by setting an unlikely victory target of 459-run, Bangladesh were dismissed for 250 runs shortly after the scheduled tea interval.
    • Note : The win is India's sixth successive series victory. In the Test, skipper Virat Kohli became the first Test batsman to hit double hundreds in four consecutive series. And Ashwin became the fastest bowler ever to take 250 Test wickets.
  • The first ever ITTF World Tour event in India held at the Thyagaraj Sports Complex in New Delhi. The 1.5 lakh US dollar India Open also happens to be the biggest ever ITTF event in terms of prize money. 
    • Note : Overall, 80 players have confirmed their participation, 52 in the men's section and 28 in the women's section. 
  • India beat South Africa by one wicket in the final of ICC Women World Cup Qualifier 2017 at Colombo, Sri Lanka. India bowled out South Africa for 244 in 49.4 overs and achieved the target of 245 runs on the last ball of the 50th over. 
    • Note: India is the only unbeaten team in the tournament.
  • International Shooting Sport Federation World Cup tournament held at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range in New Delhi on 23rd Feb 2017. The competitions will be held from from 24th Feb- to 3rd March. 
  • Sports Minister Vijay Goel has announced that first Gramin Khel Mahotsav will be held from 25th - 31st March, 2017 in New Delhi. 
  • The International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) has officially announced that New Delhi would host the rifle and pistol World Cup in 2019, which would offer Olympic quota places for Tokyo 2020. The other three World Cups in 2019 would be held in Munich, Beijing and Rio de Janeiro. The shotgun World Cups will be held in Changwon, Lahti, Al Ain and Acapulco. 
  • India has opened their account with a Bronze medal in the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup. The former Asian champion shot 228.8 in the final to fin-ish third. For the 27-year-old Ghatkar, it is her maiden World Cup medal, after two final appearances in the past. 
    • Note : China led the medal standings with two gold and one silver, while India was fifth over-all. The other gold of the day went to Australia.
  • Centre has announced to spend 350 crore rupees for providing high-quality facilities to sports persons and 200 trainers will be recruited soon in the Sports Authority of India. A recovery physiotherapy center would be established at the Centre for helping sports persons recover from injuries. 
    • Note: The State and Central Governments will promote sports in every village on the pattern of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. 
  • India bagged two medals, a gold and silver, at the shooting World Cup in New Delhi. In the 10m mixed team air pistol event, duo of Jitu Rai and Heena Sidhu clinched the Gold for India, making it the first Gold for the coun-try in this event.

  • Champion cueist Pankaj Advani has won the Indian National Snooker Championship with a 6-0 win over Pandurangaiah of Railways in a one-sided final on 03rd February 2017. 
  • Alastair Cook has resigned as England Test captain after a record 59 matches in the role. Cook tendered his resignation to England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chairman Colin Graves, but intends to continue playing Test cricket. 
  • Rituparna Das (2nd seed) from Telangana has won the Women's Singles title of the 81st Senior National Badminton Championships tournament played at Patliputra Sports Complex Patna. She defeated Reshma Karthik (9th seed) from Air India in straight sets 21-12, 21-14. 
  • Virat Kohli recorded his sixth Test 150, against Bangladesh at Hyderabad on 10th February 2017, to set the record for most 150-plus scores by an Indian captain in Tests. 
    • Note : Kohli went past Sunil Gavaskar and Mohammad Azharuddin, who both have five 150-plus Test scores each as captain. Notably, all of Kohli's last five Test centuries have been of 150+ runs.
  • India's one day captain Mithali Raj and top batter Harmanpreet Kaur were placed 2nd and 10th in the ICC batswomen's rankings released after the World Cup qualifier that ended recently. Meg Lanning of Australia leads the charts with 804 points while Raj with 733 points is sec-ond in the list. Harmanpreet, known for her towering sixes has 574 points. 
  • Azhar Ali has quit as Pakistan's ODI captain, in the wake of mounting pressure on his leadership following the 4-1 defeat in Australia. Wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed, who is the T201 captain, will take over from Azhar in one-day internationals.
  • Rishabh Pant (19 yrs) has been named the captain of the Delhi one-day team replacing Gautam Gambhir signalling a change of guard in senior state team. 
    • Pant has recently made his senior India debut in T20 format against England. 
  • Netherland native Germaine de Randamie defeated Holly Holm by (7-3) to claim the UFC Women's Featherweight Champion at the UFC 208 in Brooklyn, New York. The featherweight division was newly introduced by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in 2016. 
  • Adam Voges, Australian batsman, announced his retirement from international cricket. The Western Australia batsman has played 20 Tests, scoring 1485 runs at an average of 61.87 - second highest average in Tests after Don Bradman (Among bats-men who have played at least 20 Tests). 
    • Note : He has also figured in 31 One-Day Internationals and scored 870 runs with an average of 45.78 while 139 runs in seven Twenty20 Internationals with an average of 46.33.
  • Saina Nehwal, who was appointed a member of the International Olympic Committee's Athletes' Commission (AC) last year, would be representing the panel in the Badminton World Federation (BWF). 
    • Saina was appointed as a member of the IOC Athletes' Commission soon after the Rio Olympics 2016. Currently, ranked world number 10 in BWF rankings, Saina is now aiming to win the prestigious All England Championship in March 2017.
  • Gopal Baglay has been appointed as the new spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs. Baglay has served as the deputy high commissioner to Islamabad and earlier headed the division of the MEA deal-ing with Pakistan. Former spokesperson Vikas Swarup was appointed as India's High Commissioner to Canada.  
  • India's Lakshya Sen  has become the World No 1 Junior Badminton player. He achieved the distinction in the latest ▪ rankings of the Badminton World Federation (BWF). 
    • Lakshya is the first shuttler from IUttarakhand to attain the numero uno spot at the international level. Earlier, his broth-er Chirag Sen was ranked number two in the world junior badminton rankings.
