The Kanha Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh has become the first tiger reserve in India to officially introduce a mascot of it's own. This mascot has been named "Bhoorsingh the Barasingha". Barasingha, or swamp deer, is the state animal of Madhya Pradesh. The Kanha tiger reserve, spread over Mandla and Balaghat districts, is the only place in the world where the species exists.  Bhoorsingh was chosen among four variations by the Madhya Pradesh forest department.

"Kanha is famous for its tigers and Barasingha. While it would have been easier to simply choose a tiger as a mascot, we instead decided on a Barasingha as this subspecies of hard ground is not only found in Kanha, but also its conservation is one of the biggest wildlife success stories of India", Sanjay Shukla, Field Director of Kanha Tiger Reserve said.

As per the forest department, the mascot will not only play an important role in attracting the younger generation towards conservation but will also be used to spread awareness in form of stories and comic strips.
