Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Prudence amid uncertainty"

  • Prudence - careful, and using good judgment
  • Amid - in the middle of or surrounded by
  • Uncertainty - a situation in which something is not known, or something that is not known or certain
  • Fiscal - relating to money and financial matters, especially taxes

  • Poise - a controlled and relaxed way of behaving, even in difficult situations
  • Neutral- not saying or doing anything that would encourage or help any of the groups involved in an argument or war
  • Accommodative - to consider and include something when you are deciding what to do
  • Stance - a way of thinking about something, especially expressed in a publicly stated opinion
  • Monetary Policy - actions taken by a government to control the amount of money in an economy
  • Opted - to make a choice
  • Sit pat - to refuse to make any changes
  • Transitory - lasting for only a short time
  • Demonetisation - to officially stop using particular notes or coins, or a particular currency
  • Inflation - a general, continuous increase in prices
  • Play out - to develop or end in a particular way
  • Undergirded - to strengthen, support, hold
  • Premise - an idea or theory on which a statement or action is based
  • Thus - as a result of the fact that you have just mentioned
  • Emphasis - the particular importance or attention that is given to something
  • Caution - great care and attention
  • Disruption - a situation in which something cannot continue because of a problem
  • Impact - an effect, or an influence
  • Enduring - existing for a long time
  • Predict - to say that an event or action will happen in the future, especially as a result of knowledge or experience
  • Anticipate - to imagine or expect that something will happen
  • Projected - planned for the future or calculated based on information already known
  • Successive - happening one after the other without any break
  • Outlook - the likely future situation
  • Uncertainty - the fact that something is not known or has not been decided
  • Concern - a feeling of worry about something, especially one that a lot of people have about an important issue
  • Induct - to officially give someone a new job or position, especially in a formal ceremony
  • Oversee - to watch or organize a job or an activity to make certain that it is being done correctly
  • Monetary - relating to the money in a country
  • Domestic - relating to the country being talked about
  • Unyielding - very strict and severe
  • Strips out something - to ignore particular numbers or facts in a situation in order to understand what is really important
  • Stickiness - qualities that encourage people to spend a long time in a shop, on a website, etc
  • Reckon - to consider or have the opinion that something is as stated
  • Persistence - a situation in which something unpleasant continues to exist
  • Trigger - an event or situation, etc. that causes something to start
  • Crude oil - oil from underground that has not yet been made into other products
  • Base metal - a common metal, such as lead, tin, or copper, that reacts easily with other chemicals and is not a precious metal
  • Volatility - likely to change suddenly and unexpectedly
  • Potential - possible or likely in the future
  • Threaten - to be likely to harm or destroy something
  • Ironically - used for saying that a situation has developed in an unexpected and sometimes humorous way
  • Perishables - food products that decay quickly
  • Briefing - information that is given to someone just before they do something, or a meeting where this happens
  • Plumped for something - to choose something, especially after taking time for careful thought
  • Prudence - cautiousness (being careful and avoiding risks)
  • Flexibility - the quality of being able to change or be changed easily according to the situation

  • Bowing down - to show respect to someone who is more powerful than you
  • Patriarchy - a society, system, or organization in which men have all or most of the power and influence
  • Affirmative - a word or phrase that indicates agreement, support
  • Democratising - to change the way of running a government or organization so that the people in it are more equal and can share in making decisions
  • Inclusive - deliberately aiming to involve all types of people
  • Enhancing - to improve the quality, amount, or strength of something
  • Civic - of a town or city or the people who live in it
  • Sanitation - the systems for taking dirty water and other waste products away from buildings in order to protect people's health
  • Irrigation - the supply of water to land or crops to help growth
  • Impact - an effect, or an influence
  • Quantitative - relating to numbers or amounts
  • Qualitative - relating to how good or bad something is
  • Emphasis - the particular importance or attention that is given to something
  • Sensitisation -  to make someone notice or understand a situation or problem
  • Steadfastness - staying the same for a long time and not changing quickly or unexpectedly

  • Disrupt - to prevent something, especially a system, process, or event, from continuing as usual or as expected
  • Enforce - to make people obey a law, or to make a particular situation happen or be accepted
  • Substantial - large in size, value, or importance
  • Despite - without taking any notice of or being influenced by; not prevented by
  • Mandate - to give official permission for something to happen
  • Amendment - a change to a law that is not yet in operation and is still being discussed
  • Striving - to make a lot of effort to achieve something
  • Customary - usual / traditional
  • Protracted - lasting for a long time or made to last longer than necessary
  • Invoking - to use a law in order to achieve something
  • Consistently - in a way that does not vary
  • Quash - to say officially that something, especially an earlier official decision, is no longer to be accepted
  • Paving the way - if something paves the way for/to something else, it makes the other thing possible
  • Exert - to use something such as authority, power, influence, etc. in order to make something happen
  • Smelled blood - to recognize an opportunity to take advantage of someone who is in a difficult situation
  • Exemption - the fact of not having to obey a rule or do something that other people have to do
  • Untenable - ann untenable situation cannot continue as it is
  • Meanwhile - until something expected happens, or while something else is happening
  • Merely - just; only
  • Accord - a formal agreement
  • Insurgent -  someone who is fighting against the government in their own country
  • Milieu - the particular people and society that surround you and influence the way in which you behave
  • Embolden - to make someone brave
  • Patriarchal - a patriarchal society, system, organization etc is one in which men have all or most of the power and influence
  • Assert - to do something to show that you have power
  • Constitutionally - according to the rules in a constitution:
  • Representation - a sign, symbol, or picture of something
  • Civil society - the part of society that consists of organizations and institutions that help and look after people, their health, and their rights
  • Autonomy - a situation in which a state, region, or organization is independent and has the power to govern itself
