Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "The slowing economy"

  • Beyond doubt - having no doubts that something is true
  • Fiscal year - a financial year
  • Reveal - to make known or show something that is surprising or that was previously secret
  • Extent -  the degree to which something happens or is likely to happen
  • Pegged - to keep prices, salaries, or the amount of something at a particular level, often in relation to something else

  • Emphasised - to make something more noticeable

  • Consequent - happening as a result of something
  • Cash crunch - a situation in which a company, country, etc. does not have enough money available to do the things it usually does
  • Sectoral - relating to a sector of the economy
  • Projection -  a calculation or guess about the future based on information that you have
  • Mining - the industry or activity of removing substances such as coal or metal from the ground by digging
  • Quarrying - to dig stone out of the ground
  • Utility service - a service that is used by the public, such as an electricity or gas supply or a train service
  • Collectively - together, as a group
  • Anticipated - exopected that something will happen
  • Demonetisation - to officially stop using particular notes or coins, or a particular currency
  • Disruption - an interruption in the usual way that a system, process, or event works
  • Cash-intensive sector - a sector (business) that receives a significant amount of receipts in cash
  • Aggregate - something formed by adding together several amounts or things
  • Adverse -  having a negative or harmful effect on something
  • Silver lining - good aspect of a bad situation
  • Accelerate - to happen or make something happen at a faster rate
  • Manifest - to show something clearly, through signs or actions
  • Tide over - to supply someone for a short time with something that is lacking
  • Sowing - to put seeds in or on the ground so that plants will grow
  • Cushioning - something that makes the effects of a bad situation less severe
  • Nonetheless - despite what has just been said or done
  • Substantial - large in size, value, or importance
  • Fillip - something that causes a sudden improvement
  • Rekindle - to make something start happening again

  • Prominent - very well known and important
  • Curb - to control or limit something that is not wanted
  • Contrary - the opposite
  • Apprehension - worry about the future, or a fear that something unpleasant is going to happen
  • Injury - physical harm or damage to someone's body caused by an accident or an attack
  • Facilitate - to make something possible or easier
  • Intermediate - being between two other related things, levels, or points
  • Levy - an amount of money, such as a tax, that you have to pay to a government or organization
  • Stiff - formal and controlled in a way that is not friendly or relaxed
  • Congestion - a situation in which a place is crowded with people or vehicles, so that it is difficult to move around
  • Designated - marked, separated, or given a name for a particular purpose
  • Ongoing - happening at the present moment
  • Mandate - give (someone) authority to act in a certain way
  • Emission - something such as gas or radiation is the release of it into the atmosphere
  • Infrastructure - the basic systems and services, such as transport and power supplies, that a country or organization uses in order to work effectively
  • Evident - easily seen or understood
  • Detrimental - harmful or damaging
  • Aesthetic - relating to the enjoyment or study of beauty
  • Template - something that is used as a pattern for producing other similar things
  • Acknowledging - to know or recognize that someone or something is important
