International Current Affairs
  • The Canadian government has declared high-speed internet a basic telecommunications service and wants its citizens to have access to an unlimited data plan option and speeds of at least 50 Mbps. 
    • The internet will be available at homes, businesses, and even along major Canadian roads.
    • Note : Until now, only landline telephone was considered a basic service in the country.
National Current Affairs
  • Today (23rd December) is Kisan Diwas (Farmer's Day)
    • This day is observed across the country to celebrate the birthday of Chaudhary Charan Singh, 5th Prime Minister of India.
  • The Union Home Ministry has sanctioned 37,000 additional troops to CISF in order to bolster security at critical infrastructures like airports and metros, CISF Director General OP Singh announced today. 
    • The CISF guards 59 civil airports, while 3,000 of its personnel are deployed to guard the Delhi Metro.
  • The Karnataka government is going to provide 100% quota to local Kannadigas in private sector industries across the state.
    • The state labour minister has released a draft amendment to the Industrial Employment (Standing Orders) Rules of 1961.
    • It proposes 100% reservation for local Kannadigas in all blue-collar jobs, except the information technology and biotechnology sectors.
  • The Union Ministry of Coal has launched Coal Mitra, a web portal for allowing flexibility in utilization of domestic Coal.
    • It was launched by Union Minister of State (IC) for Power, Coal, New & Renewable Energy and Mines Piyush Goyal in New Delhi.
  • 10 metro stations in Delhi will go completely cashless in their transactions from 1st of January next year.

  • The Union Water Resources Ministry has reconstituted a Committee that was tasked with assisting the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB). 
    • Head of this new committee : A.K. Bajaj (former chairman of the Central Water Commission (CWC))
    • Members : Gopala Krishnan, R.P. Pandey, Pradeep Kumar Shukla and N.N. Rai
New Appointments
  • Samsonite-owned American Tourister has appointed India's Test captain Virat Kohli as its Brand Ambassador
    • Note : Kohli is the first Indian brand ambassador of the global luggage brand.
  • US President-elect Donald Trump has picked Peter Navarro, economist and author of 'Death by China', to head the newly-formed White House National Trade Council.
Banking & Economic Affairs
  • Japan has approved a record $43.6 billion (around ₹3 lakh crore) for its Defence budget out of its $830 billion spending budget for fiscal 2017. 
    • This comes amid Japan's increasing tensions with China and North Korea. 
    • Note : Japanese PM Shinzo Abe has been trying to achieve primary budget surplus by 2020 while Japan suffers from the world's heaviest debt burden.
Science & Technology
  • China has launched atmospheric CO2-monitoring TanSat satellite today, in an effort to curb and monitor greenhouse gas emissions. 
    • The 635-kg satellite will measure global carbon dioxide levels every 16 days over the next three years and help policy makers and scientists gather independent climate change data. Notably, China is the world's largest emitter of CO2.
Awards & Honors
  • Indian forward Jeje Lalpekhlua was named 2016's AIFF Player of the Year, an award given to the best footballer in the country. 
    • The 25-year-old who hails from Mizoram will be awarded a prize of ₹2.5 lakh.
  • Actress Sunny Leone will receive PETA's Person of the Year award for her dedication to promoting the rescue of homeless dogs and cats, as well as her compassion for animals abused and killed for their skin.
  • India's Test captain Virat Kohli has topped Forbes India's Fame Rankings, which is based on the popularity of a celebrity. 
    • In Fame Rankings, he is followed by actors Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan, who are ranked second and third respectively. 
    • Note : Virat ranks overall third on the Forbes India Celebrity 100 list, with earnings of ₹134.44 crore in 2016.
  • Seventeen-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer was named the 'Most Stylish Man' of 2016 by GQ, a leading men's magazine.
Sports Current Affairs
  • India's Shiva Keshavan won a Gold medal at the Asian Luge Championships in Japan today.
    • This is his third gold in the tournament's history, with his tally including four silvers and two bronze medals since 2005. 
    • Note : Keshavan, a five-time Winter Olympian, is India's only professional luge player and holds the Asian speed and time records in the sport.
  • India defeated South Korea 3-0 in the women's U-18 Asia Cup hockey in Bangkok today to win the Bronze medal in the tournament.
  • The Australian Open has increased its total prize money purse for the 2017 tournament to $36.19 million (over ₹245 crore), 14% more than it was in 2016. 
    • The winners of the singles tournaments will be getting over ₹18 crore. 
    • Note : The total prize money for the Australian Open has more than tripled since 2001.
