Topic 1 : "A break-up foretold"

  • Break-up - the end of a relationship
  • Foretold - to say what is going to happen in the future
  • Symptom - a sign of a larger problem
  • Underlying cause - underlying causes, facts, ideas etc are the real or basic ones, although they are not obvious or directly stated
  • Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it
  • Like-minded - like-minded people, groups etc have similar tastes, interests, and opinions
  • Unlikely - not probable or likely to happen
  • Threaten - to tell someone that you  will cause them harm, especially in order to make them do something
  • Unrest - angry or violent behaviour by people who are protesting against something
  • Irreconcilable - irreconcilable opinions, aims, or disagreements are so opposed to each other that it is impossible to reach an agreement
  • Alliance - an arrangement between two or more people, groups, or countries by which they agree to work together to achieve something
  • Opportunistic - using a situation to get power or an advantage
  • Constituency - one of the official areas of a country that elects someone to represent it in a parliament or legislature
  • Ideologically - based on a set of political opinions or beliefs of a group or an individual
  • Mandate - the authority of an elected government or official to do the things that they promised to do before an election
  • Ally - someone who is ready to help you, especially against someone else who is causing problems for you
  • Rival - a person, team, or business that competes with another
  • Overlapping - if two objects overlap the edge of one fits over the edge of the other (some aspects are shared by more than one object)
  • Valley - a low area of land between mountains or hills
  • Inevitably - used for saying that something is certain to happen
  • Grappled - to fight with someone
  • Contradictions - a difference in two or more statements, ideas, stories etc that makes it impossible for both or all of them to be true
  • Conscious - noticing that something exists or is happening and realizing that it is important
  • Vote bank - a loyal group of voters from a single community, who continously support a specific candidate or political party in elections
  • Not give an inch - to not change your opinion
  • Re - used to add the meaning "do again"
  • Negotiating - to try to reach an agreement by discussing something in a formal way
  • Wrest - to get land, power, or possessions from someone, usually by fighting
  • Ambitions - something that you very much want to do, usually something that is difficult to achieve
  • Dilemma - a situation in which you have to make a difficult decision
  • Plank - an important aspect of something, on which it is based
  • Coalition - a temporary union of different political parties that agree to form a government together
  • Trigger - to make something happen

Topic 2 : "Towards a national health policy"

  • Towards - in the direction of
  • Oppressive - to treat people unfairly or in a cruel way
  • Practice - the actual performance of an activity in a real situation
  • Sterilising - to perform an operation on someone to make them unable to produce children
  • Adopt - to decide to start using a particular idea, plan, or method
  • Vigorously - completely, strongly
  • Welfare - the health and happiness of people
  • Monitor - to regularly check something or watch someone in order to find out what is happening
  • Compensation - money that someone receives because something bad has happened to them
  • Publicised - to publish or broadcast information about a thing or person
  • Substantially - by a large amount or degree
  • Fairness - behaviour that is reasonable and right
  • Promoting - to support or encourage something
  • Contraception - methods for preventing a woman from becoming pregnant, or the use of such methods
  • Exercise - an action or actions intended to improve something or make something happen
  • Resort to something - to do or use something because it is the only thing available
  • Unthinking - used about something that you do without thinking that it might be wrong or stupid
  • Tubectomy - surgical removal of the fallopian tubes
  • Empowerment - to give someone more control over their life or more power to do something
  • Sacrificing - to give up something important or valuable so that you or other people can do or have something else
  • Ensuring - to make sure that something happens or is done
  • Undergo - to experience something that is unpleasant or something that involves a change
  • Significant - very large
  • Mismanagement - to organize or control something badly
  • Decisively - able to make decisions quickly and confidently
  • Reinforces - to make an idea, belief, or feeling stronger
  • Inseparable - if two or more things are inseparable, they are so closely connected that they cannot be considered separately
  • Unacceptable - too bad to be accepted, approved of, or allowed to continue
