Topic 1 : "At home in New Delhi"

  • Broad - very wide
  • Brushstroke - the way in which a plan or idea is explained
  • Remodelled - changed the structure or form of something
  • Rejig - organize something differently / rearrange
  • Expansive - covering a wide area in terms of space or scope / extensive
  • In terms of something - in relation to something
  • Swap - an act of exchanging one thing with another
  • Portfolio - a particular job or area of responsibility of a member of a government
  • Holding back - to hide something
  • Swearing-in - an official ceremony in which someone starting a new official job formally promises to be loyal and honest and to perform their duties well
  • Be your own person/woman/man - to be in control of your life and not allow other people to tell you what to do
  • Reshuffle - interchange the positions of (members of a team, especially government ministers)
  • Conveyed - to express a thought, feeling, or idea so that it is understood by other people
  • Firm - strong
  • Conscious - to be aware of something
  • Wields - to have a lot of influence or power over other people
  • Negotiate - to have formal discussions with someone in order to reach an agreement with them
  • Accountability - responsibility
  • Satraps - local rulers
  • Agenda - a list of aims or possible future achievements
  • Credo - a set of beliefs that influences the way you live
  • Emphasis - the particular importance or attention that is given to something
  • To give an edge - to give slightly better importance
  • Campaigns - a series of organized activities or events intended to achieve a result
  • Inducting - to accept someone officially as a member of an organization
  • Evident - clearly seen or understood
  • Inclusion - including someone in a group
  • On the brink of - * if someone or something is on the brink of a situation, that situation is likely to happen soon
  • Flabbiness - softness
  • Perceive - become aware or conscious of something
  • Impatient - wanting something to happen as soon as possible
  • Cacophony - a harsh and unpleasant mixture of loud sounds
  • Consolidate - make something stronger or more solid
  • Prospect - the possibility or likelihood of some future event occurring
  • Rivals - people who are  competing with you for the same objective or for superiority in the same field of activity
  • Cadre - a small group of people specially trained for a particular purpose or profession
  • Stamped - to make a mark in your work / activity so that people will remember you

  • Resurrecting - restore (a dead person) to life
  • Intense - of great force / strength
  • Conservative - not usually liking or trusting change
  • Anguish - qextreme unhappiness caused by physical or mental suffering
  • Hounded - being chased by someone
  • Deemed - considered or judged something in a particular way
  • Purient - encouraging an excessive interest in sexual matters, especially the sexual activity of others
  • Defamatory - damaging the good reputation of someone
  • Unconditional - complete and not limited in any way
  • Apology - an act of saying that you are sorry for something wrong you have done
  • Orchestrated - with every detail very carefully planned, sometimes secretly
  • Protests - an occasion when people show that they disagree with something by standing somewhere, shouting, carrying signs, etc
  • Verdict - an opinion or decision made after judging the facts that are given
  • Reinforces - to make something stronger
  • Jurisprudence - the study of law and the principles on which law is based
  • Faceless - characterless and dull
  • Mob - a large crowd of people
  • Upheld - confirm or support (something which has been questioned)
  • Professing - to state something
  • Contemporary - existing or happening now
  • Community - the people living in one particular area or people who are considered as a unit because of their common interests, social group, or nationality
  • Obscene - offensive
  • Affirmed - to state something as true
  • Travails - the difficulties that are experienced as part of a particular situation
  • Ridicule - to laugh at someone in an unkind way
  • Allege - to say that someone has done something illegal or wrong without giving proof
  • Vilify - to say or write unpleasant things about someone or something, in order to cause other people to have a bad opinion of them
  • Deity - a god or goddess
  • Pander - to please other people by doing or saying what they want you to do or say
  • Eroticism - sexual desire or excitement
  • Rebuts - to argue that a statement or claim is not true
  • Earthy - referring to sex and the human body in a direct way
  • Uneasily -  slightly worried or uncomfortable about a particular situation
  • Well-articulated - clearly spoken / expressed
  • Conflict - an active disagreement between people with opposing opinions or principles
  • Notion - a belief or idea
