Topic 1 : "Reaching out to Africa"

  • Reach out to - to offer help and support to someone
  • Mobilise - to organize or prepare something
  • Persuade - to make someone do something by convincing them
  • Envoys - people who are sent as representatives from one government or organization to another
  • Call off - cancel
  • Boycott - withdraw from commercial or social relations with (a country, organization, or person) as a punishment or protest
  • Extreme - reaching a highest degree / very great
  • Threat - a suggestion that something unpleasant or violent will happen
  • Rebuffing - to refuse to accept a helpful suggestion or offer from someone, by answering in an unfriendly way
  • Host - to provide the space and other things necessary for a special event
  • Embarrassingly -  nervously, worriedly and uncomfortably
  • Centring - the action or process of placing something in the middle of something else
  • Protest - a statement or action expressing disapproval of or objection to something
  • Aspiration - a hope of achieving something
  • Congolese - belonging to Congo (a country located in Central Africa)
  • Brutal - cruel / violent
  • Isolated - far away from other places, buildings, or people
  • Irrespective of something - without considering something
  • Latent - existing but not yet developed
  • Discrimination - treating a person or particular group of people differently, because of their skin colour, sex, sexuality, etc
  • Stinging - making you feel upset and annoyed
  • Reaching out to somebody - to try to communicate with a person or a group of people
  • Diplomatic - acting in a way that does not cause offence
  • Introspection - examination of and attention to your own ideas, thoughts, and feelings
  • Dehumanising - reducing human values and qualities
  • Prejudices - an unfair and unreasonable opinion or feeling
  • Rendered - provided or gave (a service, help, etc.)
  • Splash - to show something in a very noticeable way
  • Mindful - conscious or aware of something
  • Ambition - a strong desire to do or achieve something
  • Consequence - a result of a particular action or situation
  • Sedate - calm, slow and dignified
  • Template - something that is used as a pattern
  • Roster - a list of people's names, with the jobs they have been given to do
  • Outreach - the extent or length of reaching out
  • Remit - to refer a matter to someone in authority to deal with (responsibility)
  • Scaling up - increasing
  • Tackling - to try to deal with something or someone

Topic 2 : "Birth pangs of payments banks"

  • Birth pangs -
    • actual meaning - pains associated with the process of childbirth
    • meaning in this topic - difficulty / painful feeling associated with a development of something
  • Barely - by the smallest amount / only just
  • In-principle approval - a general approval, although the details are not yet checked properly
  • Gestation - the period of the development of ideas, thoughts, or plans
  • Coveted - strongly desired by many
  • Intriguing - very interesting because of being unusual or mysterious
  • Licensee - a person who has official permission to do something
  • Prohibited - to officially refuse to allow something
  • Constraints - limitations or restrictions
  • Remittances - an amount of money that you send to someone
  • Unbanked - not having access to the services of a bank or similar financial organization
  • Far-flung - places that are a great distance away
  • Rural area - countryside undeveloped area
  • Niche - a job or position that is very suitable for someone, especially one that they like
  • Standalone - a standalone company or organization manages its own activities and does not depend on a larger organization for money or approval
  • Profitability - the ability of a business to earn a profit
  • Wears thin - to become less convincing, acceptable, or popular (due to repeated use)
  • Surmise - to guess something, without having much or any proof
  • Prospect - the possibility or likelihood of some future event occurring
  • Albeit - although
  • Watered down - changed so as to be weaker in force or value
  • Catering - provide with what is needed or required
  • Migrant - a person who moves from one place to another in order to find work or better living conditions
  • Workforce - the group of people who work in a company, industry, country, etc
  • Rosy - if a situation is described as rosy, it gives hope of success or happiness
  • To develop cold feet - to suddenly become too frightened to do something you had planned to do
  • Disconcerting - to make someone feel suddenly uncertain and worried
  • Invested - to put money, effort, time, etc. into something to make a profit or get an advantage
  • Reflected in somebody - to affect other people's opinion of someone or something, especially in a bad way
  • Levy - impose (a tax, fee, or fine)
  • Introspection - the examination or observation of your own mental and emotional processes
  • Unified - combined
  • Interface - to communicate with someone, especially in a work-related situation
  • Alter - to change something (usually slightly)
  • Aggressively - using forceful action to win or to achieve success
  • Eroding - to slowly reduce or destroy something
  • Potential - having the capacity to develop into something in the future
  • Savvy - practical knowledge and ability
  • Pared down - decreased slowly
  • Unveiling - showing or announcing publicly for the first time
  • Financial inclusion - delivery of financial services at affordable costs to disadvantaged and low-income parts of society
  • Sustainably - able to continue over a period of time
