  • Delhi government's decision to ban sale, purchase and even storage of all forms of chewable tobacco including "guktha, khaini and zarda" came into effect today.

  • The Enforcement Directorate (ED) today provisionally attached assets worth Rs.2 crore belonging to former Union Minister of State for Coal Dasari Narayana Rao in connection with a coal block allocation scam case.
  • Uttar Pradesh Govt directs State Public Service Commission canceled the first paper of PCS Prelims exam held yesterday following question paper leak.
    • The government announced that 10th May 2015 is the new date for this exam.

  • British physicist Stephen Hawking is getting his name trademarked, joining the ranks of celebrities like J.K. Rowling and David Beckham, who have turned their names into brands.
    • He has also applied to get his name trademarked for charitable purposes, giving him the option of setting up a foundation, such as one to promote physics or for research into motor neurone disease, which has left him paralysed.
    • His trademark would cover computer games, powered wheelchairs, greetings cards and health care.

  • Gurgaon girl Aditi Arya was crowned Femina Miss India 2015 at the 52nd edition of the
    beauty pageant.
    • Reigning Miss India Koyal Rana, enthroned her successor Aditi with the crown made by PC Jewellers.
    • 21 contestants from across the country participated in the beauty contest.
    • The first and second runners-up were Aafreen Rachel Vaz and Vartika Singh respectively.
  • The President of India, Pranab Mukherjee presented the Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri awards today at a Civil Investiture Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
  • Internationally acclaimed filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan was today presented with the Bishwaratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika International Solidarity Award by Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.
    • Gopalakrishnan became the second recipient of this biennial award, the first one being Lubna Marium of Bangladesh in 2013.
    • The award carries a citation, a shawl, a memento and Rs 5 lakh.
