National Affairs
  • The Union Cabinet has approved the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana to provide skills training to youth across the country. 
    • The scheme will be implemented by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship through the National Skill Development Corporation with an outlay of 1, 500 crore rupees.
    • The focus under this Yojana will be on improved curricula, better pedagogy and better-trained instructors.
  • The Cabinet also cleared introducing of the Appropriation Acts Repeal Bill, 2015 in Parliament.
    • The Bill aims at repealing 758 Appropriation Acts.
  • Noticing that some TV channels have been covering live anti terrorist operations, the Information and Broadcasting ministry has asked news broadcasters to restrict such telecasts to periodic briefing by officials till the operation concludes.
  • The three-day long International Conference on Counter Terrorism organised in Jaipur concludes today.
    • The conference was organized by Rajasthan Government in collaboration with India Foundation and Sardar Patel University of Police, Security and Criminal Justice.
    • Inaugurated by Rajnath Singh (Union Home Minister) on 19th March 2015.

  • Today (21st March) is World Puppet Day.
  • World Poetry Day is being celebrated today.
    • This day was declared by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 1999.
    • The purpose of the day is to promote the reading, writing, publishing and teaching of poetry throughout the world.
  • World Down Syndrome Day is being observed today.
  • International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination observed across the world today.
    • On this day, in 1960, police opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa, against the apartheid pass laws.
    • Proclaiming the day in 1966, the United Nations General Assembly called on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.
Science & Technology
  • China rolls out world’s first hydrogen-powered tramcar
    • This tramcar has rolled off the assembly line in China's eastern Shandong Province.
    • The new tram is the only hydrogen powered vehicle in the field and makes China the only country to have mastered the technology.
  • A Chinese airline today completed the country's first commercial flight using biofuel, made from waste cooking oil, as the government seeks to promote greater environmental sustainability.
    • A Hainan Airlines flight from commercial hub Shanghai to Beijing used biofuel supplied by China National Aviation Fuel company and energy giant Sinopec,.
    • The Boeing 737 plane used a 50-50 mix of conventional jet fuel and biofuel made from "waste cooking oil collected from restaurants in China".

  • Rajendra Singh, an environment activist of India widely popular as the 'Water Man' has been conferred with Stockholm Water Prize 2015
    • This award encourages his efforts for instilling life in thousand of villages in Rajasthan through water.
    • Sweden's King Carl Gustav will present the rainwater harvesting pioneer with a cash prize of 1,50,000 Dollar during the world water week.
  • Eminent Singer Lata Mangeshkar was presented the ‘Laadli Voice of the Century’ award during the sixth edition of the national Laadli Media and Advertising Awards for Gender Sensitivity. 
    • Queen won the best movie award in the ceremony.
    • Advertising agency Ogilvy and Mather won the “Laadli Grand Prix” for its Titan Raga — ‘tum nahi badle’ advertisement.
    • The Laadli extraordinaire award went to Charu Khurana, who won a landmark judgment in the Supreme Court regarding Bollywood’s bias against women make-up artistes.
Deaths
  • Krishnarao Sable (92), popularly known as 'Shahir Sable', whose songs enriched Maharashtra's culture, passed away today.
    • He actively participated in movements such as the 'Quit India' movement, the Goa liberation struggle and Hyderabad 'liberation' and the Samyukta Maharashtra movement.
    • He also fought hard for social causes such as anti-liquor campaigns, financial welfare of folk artists and rejuvenation of folk music.
Business & Economy
  • HDFC Bank has launched Chillr, a mobile app that allows users to instantly transfer money to any contact in their phonebook 24 hours a day and seven days a week.
    • HDFC Bank has partnered with MobME, a Kochi-based technology firm, to launch this app.

  • World Cup
    • New Zealand storms into the semi-final beating West Indies by 143 runs, on the back of Martin Guptill's double ton.
    • New Zealand opener Martin Guptill hits World Cup record double century (237 in 163 balls).
    • He became the first man to score a double hundred in a World Cup knockout match.
    • This is the highest World Cup score by an individual batsman.
