Today (15th January 2014), in a surprise move, the governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Mr. Raghuram Rajan has reduced the Repo Rate (the rate at which it lends to commercial banks) by 25 basis points (One basis point is one-hundredth of a percentage point). Earlier the Repo Rate was 8%, now it has became 7.75%,  with immediate effect. This move is expected to boost market sentiments and add momentum to economic growth.

The surprise move was guided by the sharp fall in global crude prices and expectations that the government would be doing enough to keep the fiscal deficit in check. This is the first Repo Rate cut since May 2013.

Consequently, the Reverse Repo rate under the LAF stands adjusted to 6.75 per cent, and the Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) rate and the Bank Rate to 8.75 per cent with immediate effect.  The Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) has been kept unchanged at 4% of net demand and time liabilities (NDTL).

  3. A basis point is a unit of measure used in finance to describe the percentage change in the value or rate of a financial instrument. One basis point is equivalent to 0.01% (1/100th of a percent) or 0.0001 in decimal form.

  33. A number of students aspiring for bank jobs or Aam Bankers have been asking, what will the impact of cut in repo rates. Let me try to explain the same, as how it is expected to impact different segments :-

A cut in repo rate means that banks can borrow from RBI at lower rates under LAF facility. This allows the banks to cut their base rates and thereby lower lending rates for corporate borrowers as well as retail borrowers.

We can also say that this will have a positive impact on the Indian economy as banks will lower their lending rates which in turn will help in revival of Indian economy.

It is also likely to boost investment in Indian economy and help in higher demand in the economy.

For a middle class person, it can result in lower EMIs for their Car and Housing Loans. However, banks are also likely to simultaneously cut their Deposit Rates. Therefore, if you intend to put money in Fixed Deposit, do it before banks reduce their deposit rates, may be as early as this week itself.

  68. thnks pakka na?

    ReplyDelete
  69. it is nothing but an attempt to infuse liquidity in the market..as the inflation is under control so rbi takes this decesion..ya it boost the economy..purchasing power of common man will increase..

    ReplyDelete
  70. yes we can say its after efects will be inflation..

    ReplyDelete
  71. no doubt... that with the increase in demand... inflation may rise...
thats why... RBI cut interest rates by only 25 basis points.. not 50 or 100 bases point to curb more liquidity in market

    ReplyDelete
  72. i wanna add one more thng it totally depends on banks whether they decrease int rates or not..

    ReplyDelete

  91. Hi everyone, can someone please tell me who publishes half yearly financial report of country?

    ReplyDelete
  92. Priyanka a small doubt when people are going to get enough money at their hands their needs ll b satisfied r8... How can there be a higher demand???

    ReplyDelete
  93. won't rise in demand cause inflation again? Y to rise t wen it's alrdy n cntrl??

    ReplyDelete
  94. it'll b actvated wen yu receive the call letter for interview

    ReplyDelete
  95. Why this sudden changes in rates? any reason. Market also goes high today, highest since 5 yrs.

    ReplyDelete
  96. See now the inflation rate is falling down... by decreasing the repo rates taking loans from bank will be easier so people will have more money which will lead to increase in demand....
which in turn increases production (output)... therefore constant output growth and low and stable inflation will be achieved which will make our Indian economy a stable one
