International Affairs

• The United Nations will soon declare 21st June as World Yoga Day following a proposal by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
• Three months ago, PM Modi had appealed to the world community that India's yoga should be celebrated as World Yoga Day.
• 170 nations have supported the idea.
• Typhoon Hagupit makes landfall in eastern Philippines with wind speed of around 200 kilometers an hour.

National Affairs

• India today set a new world record for the Largest Human Flag, formed by over 50,000 volunteers, beating the previous record held by Pakistan.
• The event saw about one and a half lakh volunteers, mainly youth, turned up for the event at YMCA Grounds in Chennai even as fifty thousand of them formed the tricolour.
• Diseases caused by tobacco consumption caused an economic burden of Rs 1.04 lakh crore in 2011 to the country, according to a report by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Science & Technology

• India's latest communication satellite GSAT-16 has been placed in orbit by Ariane 5 Rocket today from the space port of Kourou in French Guiana.
• GSAT-16 was launched into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO).
• Indian satellite's co-passenger DIRECTV-14 aimed at providing direct-to-home television broadcasts across the US, was also launched by Ariane 5. 
• GSAT-16 carries a total of 48 communication transponders, the largest by a communication satellite developed by the ISRO so far.
• Discarded laptop batteries still have enough life in them to power slums in India and other developing countries, a new study has found.
• The research presented at a conference in San Jose, US, analysed a sample of discarded batteries and found 70 per cent had enough power to keep an LED light on for more than four hours a day for a year.

• Making her the oldest woman to have successfully undergone the surgery in the private sector, 102-year-old Maya Devi from Panipat was implanted with a pacemaker at the Fortis Escorts Heart Institute in New Delhi.

• Kenyan Amos Meindi wins the 29th Pune International full Marathon.
• In a massive blow to Pakistan cricket, all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez was suspended by the ICC after his bowling action was found to be illegal in bio-mechanic tests.
