National Affairs

• Centre appeals doctors to give free insulin for poor kids.
• Pitching for approximately 75,000 juvenile diabetic patients, Union minister Jitendra Singh, a practicing doctor himself, said a high rate of death among such children was mainly due to inability of their parents to afford insulin for their lifelong treatment.
• Power tariff in Delhi may go up next month as the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) is all set to levy a fuel surcharge to help the private distribution companies adjust their power purchase cost.

International Affairs

• The Breast Cancer Awareness Month is marked across the world every October, to increase awareness on early detection and treatment as well as palliative care of this disease, says WHO.
• Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide.
• There are 1.38 million new cases and 4,58,000 deaths from breast cancer each year.
• Terming the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong as "illegal", China today warned that the agitation that has paralysed the city would end up creating havoc in the former British colony.
• In recent days, protests have been staged in Hong Kong in the name of seeking "real universal suffrage," causing traffic jams, fewer tourists, the stock market plunge and the suspension of schools and stores.
• Violating the ceasefire for the 10th time in October, Pakistani troops today opened heavy fire on Indian posts along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir.

• The Finance Ministry has asked public sector banks to tighten norms, including KYC monitoring for high-value fixed deposits, to check the kind of frauds suspected to have been committed at Dena Bank and OBC. Banks have been advised to categorise fixed deposits, which may fall under high value criteria
• Telecom operators have raised mobile internet rates up to 100 per cent in June-September period across country.
• Airtel is latest to increase mobile internet rates by up to 33 per cent while Vodafone and Idea have started gradually implementing the increased mobile internet rates from June.

Science & Technology

• A NASA—backed study is exploring the feasibility of lowering the cost of a human expedition to Mars by putting the astronauts in deep sleep.
• This deep sleep, called torpor, would reduce astronauts’ metabolic functions with existing medical procedures.

Sports

• Suryakumar Yadav, Kolkata Knight Riders’ part-time off-spinner, has been reported for a suspect illegal bowling action, becoming the fifth bowler to be called in the just concluded Champions League Twenty20 tournament. 
• Indian boxer L Sarita Devi has escaped with a warning after apologizing for her petulant display at the Asian Games when she refused to accept her bronze medal.
