  • Today (20th October 2014) is World Osteoporosis Day
    • Organized by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), World Osteoporosis Day involves campaigns by national osteoporosis patient societies from around the world with activities in over 90 countries
    • Osteoporosis, a progressive bone disease causes more than 8.9 million fractures annually worldwide and is estimated to affect 200 million across the globe.
    • 80% of the victims of osteoporosis worldwide are women above the age of 50 years.
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared Nigeria Ebola free, after a 42 day (six weeks) period with no new cases.
  • The Australian Parliament has reversed a controversial decision to impose restrictions on people visiting the building wearing Islamic headguards or burqa that cover their face.
    • Visitors will now have to lift any facial covering briefly when passing through security.

  • Joko Widodo, a commoner who was born in a Javan slum, was sworn in as president of Indonesia.
    • Widodo, known by his nickname Jokowi, is Indonesia’s second directly-elected President.
    • He is the first Indonesian president not to have emerged from the country’s political elite or to have been an army general.
    • He succeeded Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who stepped down after serving two five-year terms.
  • Pritam Munde, the second daughter of late BJP leader Gopinath Munde, scripted Lok Sabha history winning the Beed seat in Maharashtra in a bypoll by a record margin of nearly seven lakh votes.
National Affairs
  • Union Cabinet decides to promulgate an ordinance to take back cancelled coal blocks and reallocate them.
  • Goa Legislative Assembly today ratified the Constitutional Amendment pertaining to judicial accountability passed by the Parliament.
    • The Amendment deals with appointment of Chief Justices of the Supreme Court and High Courts and other Judges of the Supreme Court.
  • The Centre has asked all states to see to it that women make up 33 per cent of their police forces. 
  • In fresh steps to cleanse public life, the Election Commission has proposed that candidates against whom charges have been framed in serious crimes be barred from contesting elections and that false affidavits should also become a ground for disqualification.

Business & Economy
  • Looking to end uncertainty in coal block allocation, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today said that the government will offer a pool of coal mines to private players via e-auction process. The government will promulgate an ordinance to take back cancelled coal blocks.
  • India’s overall rice production is unlikely to slip below the level of 100 million tonnes this year despite some impact on the kharif crop in few states due to rains following ‘Hudhud’ cyclone, a top government official said.
  • India’s biggest two-wheeler maker Hero MotoCorp’s today said it has earmarked an investment of Rs. 5,000 crore to build new manufacturing plants, including outside of India (Colombia and Bangladesh) , and an R&D centre within the next three years.
