National Affairs
  • People under preventive detention have the right to vote, the Election Commission has said ahead of Assembly elections in Maharashtra and Haryana, and warned that there should be "no ground" for any grievance due to non-compliance of the directive. 
  • Rajasthan Government has launched an action plan to resolve problem of malnutrition among children in Baran district.
    • Under this action plan, health department has started screening of children facing malnutrition and provide training to nurses and 300 Asha Sahyogini workers.
    • Health Minister RajendraRathor instructed officials to visit Baran and monitor the schemes being operated for welfare of Saharia tribals in the region.
  • Textile minister Santosh Gangwar has said that Government will establish 26 Textile parks in the country.

  • Former finance minister Ashraf Ghani was declared Afghanistan's next president on Sunday, hours after signing a power-sharing deal with his rival Abdullah that ended a prolonged standoff over the disputed result.
    • Abdullah will become "chief executive officer" (CEO), a role similar to prime minister -- setting up a tricky balance of power as Afghanistan enters a new era.

  • Actress Poplly Bergen (84), best known for her role in 1962 film ‘Cape Fear’ passed away. 
  • Former Editor in Chief of National Herald A N Dar (80) passes away. He also served as Resident Editor of Indian Express in New Delhi.
Science & Technology
  • Public broadcaster Doordarshan plans to start broadcasting directly a bouquet of 20 free-to-air channels in partnership with private media houses on mobile phones from next year.
Sports
  • Asian Games 2014
    • Taiwan's Hsu Shu-ching broke one world record and equaled another as she took the women's 53kg class weightlifting gold at the Asian Games today.
    • Indian men’s team wins bronze in 10m air pistol.
    • Indian women's Badminton team settles for bronze after loss to South Korea
    • Dipika assures India its first women's singles medal
    • Saurav Ghosal confirms third consecutive men's singles medal
    • The Indian Olympic Association has been fined $10,000 for withdrawing teams from the Asian Games at a late stage, but All India Tennis Association chief Anil Khanna is hopeful that the penalty would be withdrawn. 
    • South Korea currently lead the medal table with 18 golds with China in second with 15.
    • China has won more medals overall though 31 to South Korea's 31.
    • India is currently on 10th position, tied with Hong Kong with four medals each (one gold, three bronze).
