National Affairs
  • Army Chief General Bikram Singh, who is in China on a four-day official visit, today held talks with People's Liberation Army (PLA) Chief of General Staff Fang Fenghui.
  • Union Minister for Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises Kalraj Mishra inaugurated the fourth edition of the India International Leather Fair in New Delhi today.Expressing concern over misuse of anti-dowry law by "disgruntled" wives against her husband and in-laws, the Supreme Court today ruled that police cannot arrest accused in such cases "automatically" and it must give reasons for taking such steps which would be judicially examined.
  • Home Minister Rajnath Singh today directed massive crackdown against hoarding of essential commodities including onion and potatoes in Delhi and asked the administration to take steps to control price rise.
  • Indian Railways held a trial run of a train at a speed of 160 kmph on the Delhi-Agra route as it looks to launch a semi-high speed service between the two destinations in November.
  •  A special commando-trained squad of paramilitary troops called the Parliament Duty Group (PDG) has taken over security duties at the Parliament complex, days before the first budget session of the new government starts.
  • The government will add four vaccines as part of he Universal Immunization Programme (UIP), to reduce child mortality by two-thirds by next year and meet global polio eradication targets, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Today.
  • At least 660 rape crisis centres will be established across the country and named as Nirbhaya centres, as a tribute to the victim of December 16, 2012 Delhi gang-rape case.
International Affairs
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi today met Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg and said direct communication with people was critical for governance.
  • The director of U.N. humanitarian operations, John Ging appealed for hundreds of millions of dollars to alleviate major humanitarian emergencies in Yemen, where 10.5 million people need food, and in Somalia, where all the indicators point to a repeat of its 2011 famine.
  • United States Senator John McCain called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi today and conveyed the high level of expectations in the United States about a new momentum in India’s economic growth and all-round progress under the new government and wished Prime Minister all success in this endeavour.

  • England have included all-rounder Ben Stokes in the 13-member squad for the first Test match against India, starting 9 July at Trent Bridge, Nottingham.
  • Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek enter men’s doubles semifinals of Wimbledon 2014 beating D. Nestor and N. Zimonjic
