National Affairs
  • In an effort to check malnutrition among children residing in slums, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has launched a health-awareness campaign in New Delhi area.
  • The 53rd India International Garment Fair (14th - 16th July 2014) started at Pragti Maidan, New Delhi.
  • The outbreak of malaria in Tripura since last month has claimed 68 lives and affected over 30,000 people, Health Minister Badal Choudhury announced.
  • The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) observed the Odisha government's target of providing 35 per cent irrigation facilities was not achieved in 152 of the state's 314 blocks while supply of minimum drinking water was not assured in 95 urban local bodies.

  • Chinese President Xi Jinping invited Narendra Modi to attend a summit of Asia-Pacific (APEC) leaders in Beijing in November.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch his first multilateral engagement with BRICS leaders, giving top priority for the establishment of the BRICS development bank with equal share holding for all the five members.

  • Senior Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Giriraj Kishore passed away.
  • LorinMaazel , widely seen as one of the greatest modern conductors of classical music, died in the US
  • Nobel prize winning author NadineGordimer passes away.

  • President presented  the Gandhi Peace Prize for the year 2013 to Shri. Chandi Prasad Bhatt (Chipko) in a function at Rashtrapathi Bhavan.
Business & Economy
  • The government has slapped an additional penalty of $579 million on Reliance Industries (RIL) for producing less than targeted natural gas from its KG-D6 block, Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced.
  • Retail inflation fell to 30-month low of 7.31 per cent in June, mainly on account of lower prices of food items, including vegetables, cereals and meat.
  • Closing five-and-a-half year long probe into the country's biggest corporate fraud, Sebi barred erstwhile Satyam Computer's founder B Ramalinga Raju and four others from markets for 14 years.

  • Eighteen Indian track and field athletes left for Scotland for the 20th Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow from 23rd July 2014 to 3rd August 2014
  • Star Sri Lankan batsman Mahela Jayawardene is to retire from Test cricket later this year.
