International Affairs
  • US Secretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday ruled out a military solution for Syria, saying its conflict does not resemble Libya's while calling for a settlement based on last year's Geneva peace plan.
  • US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden spent a fourth day at a Moscow airport with his onward travel plans still a mystery after Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected calls for his extradition to the US.
  • Three Chinese astronauts safely returned to Earth after a record 14-day rendezvous in space to experiment with docking technologies of a proposed space lab, marking the latest success for the Communist giant's manned space programme.

National Affairs
  • Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will receive the United Nations Global Award for Public Service from UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon at a ceremony to be held in Bahrain tomorrow.
  • Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will release a postage stamp on renowned Kashmiri poet Ghulam Ahmad Mehjoor here tomorrow.
  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) is likely to approve tomorrow a proposal to disinvest 7.64 per cent of the Government stake in National Fertilisers Ltd (NFL), which is expected to fetch over Rs 175 crore to the exchequer.
  • Recently, a Coast Guard maritime reconnaissance aircraft had taken off in the skies of Daman and adjoining Arabian Sea with all women crew comprising Asst Comdt Neetu Singh Bartwal (Captain of the aircraft), Asst Comdt Neha Murudkar (pilot in command) and Asst Comdt Shristi Singh (Co-pilot).
  • Rajasthan government approved a new agriculture policy, land allotment for a Memu rail coach factory at Bhilwara, and housing policy for lawyers.
  • President Pranab Mukherjee condoled death of personnel of IAF, ITBP and NDRF in helicopter crash during rescue operations at Kedarnath.

  • The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued notices to the West Bengal government and the Centre on plea of state election commission for deployment of adequate security forces for panchayat polls.
  • The State-run power producer NTPC said its board has approved setting up of a 50 MW solar energy project in Madhya Pradesh, estimated to cost over Rs 346 crore.
  • 23-year-old Sanchita Toto earned the distinction of becoming the first woman honours graduate among the endangered Toto tribe in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district.

  • In a world first, Japan is set to send a talking robot-astronaut to the International Space Station to conduct the first conversation between a human and a robot in outer space.
  • Mother nature continues to serve up surprises, with the discovery of a completely new species of bird previously unknown to science.Ornithology experts are getting in a flutter about the Cambodian tailorbird which has been found living in the capital city, Phnom Penh.It is roughly the same size as a common sparrow with a distinctive red flash on its head. It's undercarriage is grey in colour with darker coloured wings.

Sports
  • India's Priyanshu Pandey clinched the individual gold medal in double trap besides claiming a silver in the team event along with his teammates at the 5th Junior International Shotgun Competition in Orimattila, Finland.
  • The Indian men's weightlifting team finished runners-up in the Asian Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan for the first time in its competitive history even though none of them could bag a medal at the event which concluded today.
  • Eighteen rural girls from Jharkhand are all set to board a Madrid-bound flight tomorrow to play Donosti Cup football tournament in Spain from July 1-6. 
  • General Secretary of Kurash Association of India Ravi Kapoor has been nominated as Chef de Mission of the Indian contingent for the 4th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games to be held in Korea.
