National

  • U.R. Rao became the first Indian to be inducted into the Satellite Hall Of Fame for his contribution to the Indian space research for a decade (1984-1994). He joins the elite club of 50 other renowned space scientists including Arthur C. Clarke.
  • Minister for Rural development, Jairam Ramesh proposed a Developmental Financial Institution (DFI) as an alternate to women bank proposed by finance minister in budget 2012-13. DFI is to cater needs of SHGs (Self Help Groups) and thus promote financial inclusion agenda.
  • Indigenously developed cryogenic was successfully ignited at Liquid Propulsion System Centre (LPSC), Mahendragiri (Tamil Nadu). It gave boost to ISRO’s GSLV-D5 launch scheduled in July.
  • Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama inaugurated 130 foot Buddha statue at Buddha park in Rabong, Sikkim. The place was named as Tathagathasthal.
  • After BRICS summit, talking to reporters PM Manmohan Singh reiterated that slowdown in the reform process of IMF worrying developing nations.
  • US delegation led by three Republican legislators praised Gujarat chief minister NarendraModi for his developmental work in the state and extended invitation to visit USA. Its noteworthy here that Modi was rejected visa to US in 2005 on account of communal riots in Gujarat in 2002.

International

  • MalalaYousafzai signed a deal worth 2 million pound to publish her book I AM MALALA. She said the book describes not only her story but the story of 61 million children who are denied education in the country. 
  • UN member nations going to approve global Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), a first step towards regulating $70 billion arms business across international borders.
  • Workshops were held as part of World Social Forum meet at Tunis, Tunisia. It focused majorly on women rights.
  • Peace talks started between Thai authorities and Muslim separatist leaders in a move to end decades of violence in Thailand. Talks being held at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
  • 12 students were killed in an attack on Damascus University, Syria. Rebels were blamed for this attack in the state capital.

Economy

  • Current Account Deficit (CAD) boosts up to a record high of 6.7% of GDP during October- December quarter for financial year 2012-13.
  • Financial Sector Legislative Reforms Commission (FSLRC) appointed to reform financial regulators headed by Justice B. N. Sri Krishna proposed an Indian Financial Code Bill. This’ll enable creation of unified financial regulator to meet risks in future financial management.
  • D. Siva Kumar, Nokia’s operations head of India, West Asia and Africa quit the Finnish mobile company. He played major role in upgrading Nokia from 71st position to 1st in India.

Sports

  • New Zealand batsman Jesse Ryder was assaulted in Christchurch by four men. He’s on medically induced coma due to fracture in skull and several other injuries.
  • International boxer Ram Singh was dismissed in a case where heroine worth 130 crore was sieged from him. He’s sparring partner of Olympian Vijender Singh.
