8th GES Summit 2017 - Ivanka Trump's Visit to India : Highlights

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Advisor to the President and head of the United States delegation Ivanka Trump jointly inaugurated the 8th edition of the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) in Hyderabad on 28th November 2017. The 3 day Summit is being organised annually since 2010 by the government of the United States of America. This time NITI Aayog has been partnered with to host it in India. Here are some important points you should know about this summit.

The Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) is the preeminent annual entrepreneurship gathering that convenes over one thousand emerging entrepreneurs, investors, and supporters from around the Washington D.C. to Istanbul, Dubai, Marrakech, Nairobi, Kuala Lumpur, Silicon Valley, and now in Hyderabad. US President Donald J. Trump announced the Summit during the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the White House on June 26, 2017.
Theme of GES 2017 : ‘Women First, Prosperity for All’.
This theme highlights that when women do better, countries do better.

Important Points to Note :
  • This is the first time India has hosted the Global Entrepreneurship Summit. 
  • This is also the first time that the GES is being held in South Asia.

The summit essentially aims to support women entrepreneurs and foster economic growth globally. Also, this year's summit primarily focused on sectors like Energy & Infrastructure, Healthcare & Life Sciences, Financial Technology & Digital Economy and Media & Entertainment.

Highlights of GES 2017

PM Modi inaugurated the event by launching the GES logo and the indigenously developed robot Mitra said, “The theme, ‘women first, prosperity for all’ makes this edition of GSE stand out. In Indian mythology, woman is an incarnation of Shakti- the Goddess of power, we believe women empowerment is vital to our development.”

Over 1500 attendees, including entrepreneurs, investors, educators, government officials, and business representatives represented the full measure of entrepreneurial talent from diverse backgrounds across our nation and the world. 

The daughter and advisor of US President, Donald Trump, Ivanka Trump's presence is the major highlight of the summit. She visited India for the first time. She started the day with a panel discussion titled, 'We can do it! Innovations in workforce development and skills training'. The panelists on the discussion were Chanda Kochhar, MD and CEO, ICICI Bank, Cherie Blair. The session was moderated by Karen Quintos of Dell.

Highlights from Ivanka Trump's speech in GES 2017 :

  • This summit is a symbol of growing economic and security cooperation between India and US.
  • For the first time ever, women make up 50 per cent of the people selected for this summit.
  • Women entrepreneurs got less than 3 percent funding to establish businesses in 2016.
  • Today, more than 11 million women in the US own businesses.
  • In many countries women cannot even walk the streets without men. The women entrepreneurs finance initiative will provide access to capital, network to women in developing countries. It also seeks to address the legal barriers that limit opportunity for women entrepreneurs.
  • Women still face steep obstacles in starting, growing and establishing their businesses.
  • We are committed to supporting women and men both inside and outside of their homes. Women are more likely than men to hire other women.
  • Here with us today is Reyan. Reyan is just 15 years old but that has not stopped her from founding a company to crate energy by rainwater harvest.
  • The women here today represent the grit, determination of every woman. You prove to the world that we have the power to rise above the challenges we face.
