Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Warm, warmer: on climate change"
  • Convention - a meeting that a lot of people belonging to a particular profession or organization go to in order to discuss things
  • Imperative - something that is very important and urgent
  • Adequate - good enough or large enough for a particular purpose
  • Mitigation - a reduction in the harmful effects of something
  • Intensity - strength
  • Emission - a substance, especially a gas, that goes into the air
  • Heed - to consider someone’s advice or warning and do what they suggest
  • Predicate - to base an action or decision on the existence or truth of something else
  • Impact - an effect, or an influence
  • Drought - a long period of time when there is little or no rain and crops die
  • Rigid - not easily changed
  • Resolution - the action of solving a problem or dealing with a disagreement in a satisfactory way
  • Mitigation - a reduction in the harmful effects of something
  • Mantle - the authority or responsibility connected with someone’s position, duties, or beliefs
  • Leapfrog - to improve your position by going past other people quickly or by missing out some stages
  • Paradigm - a set of ideas that are used for understanding or explaining something
  • Chalked out - to outline / explain something
  • Renewable energy - renewable energy and natural materials replace themselves by natural processes, so that they are never completely used up
  • Resolutely - in an admirably purposeful, determined manner
  • Rooftop - the outside of the roof of a building
  • Decarbonisation - to reduce the amount of gaseous carbon compounds released into the atmosphere as a result of human activity
  • Alliance - an arrangement between two or more people, groups, or countries by which they agree to work together to achieve something
  • Abatement - a reduction in something harmful or unpleasant
  • Negate - to make something have no effect
  • Incentive - something that makes you want to do something or to work harder, because you know that you will benefit by doing this
  • Former - used for describing someone or something that had a particular job, title, status etc in the past, but not now
  • Instability - a situation that keeps changing, so that you are worried about what might happen
  • Plung - to fall quickly from a high position
  • Reignite - to make something such as a disagreement or worry that was disappearing grow stronger
  • Proxy - the authority to represent someone else
  • Coalition - a temporary union of different political parties that agree to form a government together
  • Militia - a group of ordinary people who are trained as soldiers to fight in an emergency
  • Confront - to deal with a difficult situation
  • Rival - a person, team, or business that competes with another
  • Speculation - ideas or discussion about why something has happened or what might happen
  • Conventional - of the usual, traditional, or accepted type, instead of being new and different
  • Amass - to collect a lot of something such as money or information over a period of time
  • Enormous - very large in size or quantity
  • Clout - the authority to make decisions, or the power to influence events
  • Backed - supported
  • Confrontational - behaving in a way that shows you want to have an argument or fight with someone
  • Potential - possible or likely in the future
  • Retaliate - to do something harmful or unpleasant to someone because they have done something harmful or unpleasant to you
  • Pawn - a person who does not have any real power but is used by others to achieve something
  • Forge - to work hard to achieve something
  • Wary - not completely trusting or certain about something or someone
  • Disrupt - to interrupt something and prevent it from continuing by creating a problem
