International Current Affairs
  • Hurricane Harvey became the most powerful storm to hit US' Texas in more than 50 years.
    • Harvey made landfall on the Texas coast as a Category 4 hurricane with winds of over 200 km per hour. 
    • Note : It is the first major hurricane to make landfall in the United States since Wilma in 2005, ending a record 12-year period with no storms making landfall in the United States as a major hurricane.
National Current Affairs
  • The Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata has celebrated its founder, Mother Teresa's 107th birth anniversary by lighting candles at her grave and conducting special prayers. 
    • Important Points to Note
      • Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 "for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress".
      • She was honored with Bharat Ratna in 1980.
  • Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa today inaugurated the 56th annual three-day conference of Indian Society of Aerospace Medicine at the Institute of Aerospace Medicine in Bengaluru. 
  • The Uttar Pradesh government will bring a New policy to promote Khadi which is likely to be implemented from April 2018.
    • A subsidy of 15% would be given on Khadi products under the policy.
Awards & Honors
  • A trio of scientists who defied Einstein by proving the nonlocal nature of quantum entanglement will be honoured with the John Stewart Bell Prize from the University of Toronto. 
    • They are :
      • Ronald Hanson, Delft University of Technology, Netherlands
      • Sae-Woo Nam, of the National Institute of Standards & Technology, United States
      • Anton Zeilinger, University of Vienna, Austria
    • The prize recognizes the most significant recent achievements in the world in quantum mechanics and is considered by many to be the top international award in the field.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has given a nod to Spice Digital Ltd. for processing bill payments under the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) as a Bharat Bill Payment Operating Unit (BBPOU).
    • The BBPS through its centralised bill payment system will allow the users to use a single website or outlet to pay all their monthly or repetitive bills such as mobile phone and electricity.
Science & Technology
  • The Most advanced Space Weather Radar in the World is to be built in the Arctic by an international partnership including the UK, thanks to new investment, in the region of £4 to £6m from NERC.
    • The EISCAT_3D radar will provide UK scientists with a cutting-edge tool to probe the upper atmosphere and near-Earth space, helping them understand the effects of space weather storms on technology, society and the environment.

  • A 21-year-old boy from Surat in Gujarat, Aditya Jhawar, has become the youngest in India to complete Chartered Accountancy (CA), Company Secretary (CS), and Cost and Management Accountancy (CMA)
Deaths
  • Charles Bentley (87), who in the 1950s led an expedition that measured the West Antarctic Ice Sheet for the first time, has passed away.
    • Spending 25 consecutive months on the ice, the American glaciologist discovered the 3,000-metre-thick ice sheet was equally submerged under sea as it was above.

  • India won South Asian Football Federation Under-15 Championship defeating host Nepal by 2-1 in the final at Kathmandu.
  • Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal settled for a Bronze medal after crashing out of the Badminton World Championships in the semifinals.
  • Indian shuttler PV Sindhu has entered the final of the Badminton World Championships for the first time, assuring India of at least a silver medal. 
  • Undefeated professional boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. announced his retirement after knocking out MMA Champion Conor McGregor in the 'richest fight in history'.
