Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Uncertainty ahead: On Pakistan political crisis"
  • Uncertainty - a nervous feeling that you have because you think bad things might happen
  • Crisis - an extremely difficult or dangerous point in a situation
  • Disqualification - a situation in which someone is not allowed to take part in something because they have committed an offence or have done something that is not allowed by the rules
  • Instability - a situation that keeps changing, so that you are worried about what might happen
  • Vacuum - an empty space
  • Premiership - the position of being Prime Minister
  • Overthrowing - to force a leader or government out of their position of power
  • Coup - an occasion when a group of people takes control of a country, usually by means of military force
  • Invoke -  to use a law or rule in order to achieve something
  • Righteous - morally good or correct
  • Disclose - to give information to people, especially information that was secret
  • Money-laundering - the crime of moving money that has been obtained illegally through banks and other businesses to make it seem as if the money has been obtained legally
  • Allegation - a statement that someone has done something wrong or illegal even though this has not been proved
  • Regulator - a person or organization whose job is to be certain that companies, systems etc act fairly and follow rules
  • Endorsement - an occasion when someone gives official or public support to a particular person or thing
  • Accountability - a situation in which people know who is responsible for something and can ask them to explain its state or quality

  • Immense - extremely large
  • Sustained - continuing at the same level or rate for a long time
  • Flashpoint - a place where violence is likely to develop
  • Refrained from something - to stop yourself from doing something
  • Show your hand - to let someone know what you intend to do or what methods you have of doing it
  • Disenchantment - disappointed and no longer enthusiastic about someone or something
  • Undermine -  to make something or someone become gradually less effective, confident, or successful
  • Resultant - happening as a result of something that has just been mentioned
  • Successor - someone who has an important position after someone else
  • Transition - the process of changing from one situation, form, or state to another
  • Rival - a person, team, or business that competes with another
  • Prolonged - continuing for a long time
  • Run-in with someone - to have a serious argument with someone
  • Galvanising - to cause someone to suddenly take action, especially by shocking or exciting them in some way
  • Campaign - a series of actions intended to produce political or social change
  • Backroom - used for describing work that is important but is done in a private or secret way
  • Have plate full - to have a lot of work to do or a lot of problems to deal with

  • Disarray - a situation in which people are very confused or things are not organized, especially because something unexpected has happened
  • Desertion - the act of leaving the armed forces without permission
  • Malaise - a general feeling of being worried, unhappy, or not satisfied
  • Outright - complete
  • Majority - the number of votes by which a person or party wins an election
  • Breakthrough - a time when you begin to be successful at something
  • Rival - a person, team, or business that competes with another
  • Boasts - to have something good, often an attractive feature that other people admire
  • Successors - people who has an important position after someone else
  • Consecutive - following one after another in order and with nothing else in between
  • Incumbency - an official position
  • Hangs over someone / something - if something hangs over you, you worry about it or feel upset about it
  • Have the stomach for something - to have enough determination to do something unpleasant or dangerous
  • Head-to-head - competing or meeting directly with someone or something else
  • Innocuous - completely harmless ( causing no harm)
  • Defiance - refusal to obey a person or rule
  • Eventually - at the end of a process or period of time in which many things happen
  • Parting of ways - a point at which two people or groups decide to separate or stop working together, often when they no longer agree about something
  • Deserting - to leave someone without help or in a difficult situation and not come back
  • Resent - to experience angry unhappy feelings because you think you have been treated unfairly or without enough respect
  • Wield -  to have and be able to use power or influence
  • Set the stage for something - to create the conditions in which something is likely to happen
  • Revolt - to say that you will not accept someone’s authority or leadership
  • Panic - a sudden strong feeling of fear or worry that makes you unable to think clearly or calmly

  • Manoeuvring - clever or dishonest behaviour that allows you to get something that you want
  • Evidently - used for saying that something is obvious
  • Portray -  to show or describe someone or something in a particular way
  • Poaching - to convince someone to leave a group or organization and become a member of yours, especially by using secret or dishonest methods
  • Susceptible - easily influenced or affected by something
  • Impact - an effect, or an influence
  • Galvanise - to shock or affect someone enough to produce a strong and immediate reaction
  • Invincibility - the quality of being strong and not easy to break
  • Larger-than-life - attracting a lot of attention
  • Breed - to make negative feelings or situations develop
  • Inability - the fact of not being able to do something
  • Miss a trick - fail to be aware of what is going on
