Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "A foregone conclusion: On presidential poll race"
  • Foregone conclusion - a result that you can be certain about before it happens
  • Set the tone (for something) - to establish a particular mood or character for something
  • Agenda - a secret aim or reason for doing something
  • Trappings - possessions that show that someone is rich, powerful, or important
  • Ideological - related to a set of beliefs or principles, especially one on which a political system, party, or organization is based
  • Constrained - behaving in a way that is very controlled and not natural
  • On someone’s behalf - instead of someone, or as a representative of someone
  • Anything but - used for emphasizing that a particular word does not describe someone or something, because the opposite is true about them
  • Old guard - the people in an organization who have been there for a long time and do not like changes or new ideas
  • Set the stage for something - to create the conditions in which something is likely to happen
  • Swathed in something - to completely cover someone or something with something
  • Secular - not religious, or not connected with religion
  • Disadvantaged - disadvantaged people do not have the same advantages as other people, for example because they do not have much money
  • Intent - the intention to do something
  • Garnering - to collect or obtain a large amount of something useful or important
  • Alliance - an arrangement between two or more people, groups, or countries by which they agree to work together to achieve something
  • Obliged - to force someone to do something, or to make it necessary for someone to do something
  • Tactic - a particular method or plan for achieving something
  • Nominee - someone who has been officially suggested for a job or a prize
  • Bolster - to make something stronger or more effective
  • Coup - an occasion when someone suddenly gains control in an organization
  • Pulled off -  to succeed in doing something that is difficult
  • Backing - support
  • Weighing - to consider all the aspects of a situation carefully before making a decision
  • Fallout - the unpleasant effects of something that has happened
  • Embroiled - involved in a difficult situation
  • Allegation - a statement that someone has done something wrong or illegal even though this has not been proved
  • Faction - a small group within a larger group, consisting of people with different opinions from the rest
  • Regime - a system or form of government
  • Restive - unwilling to be controlled or be patient
  • Engaging - attractive and pleasant in a way that makes people like you
  • Diplomatic - relating to the profession or skill of preserving or creating friendly relationships between countries
  • Tragic - causing or involving great sadness, because someone suffers or dies
  • Imprison - to put someone in a prison (jail)
  • Setback - a problem that delays or that stops progress or makes a situation worse
  • Dialling down - to reduce the level of tension or intensity in a situation
  • Crisis - an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
  • Defiance - refusal to obey a person or rule
  • Rein - control
  • Hostile - behaving in a very unfriendly or threatening way towards someone
  • Propaganda - information, especially false information, that a government or organization spreads in order to influence people’s opinions and beliefs
  • Fallout - the unpleasant effects of something that has happened
  • Predictably - if something is predictable, it happens in the way that you would expect
  • Flayed - to criticize someone or something in a very severe or cruel way
  • Sanction - an official order to stop communication, trade, etc with a country that has broken international law
  • On the face of it - used for saying that something appears to be true but might not be true when you have examined it in more detail
  • Advocate - to publicly support a particular policy or way of doing things
  • Diplomacy - the profession or skill of preserving or creating friendly relationships between countries
  • Worthwhile - if something is worthwhile, it is worth the time, money, or effort that you spend on it
  • Hostile - behaving in a very unfriendly or threatening way towards someone
  • Longstanding - having existed for a long time
  • Dynastic - related to a family whose members rule a country or region for a long period of time
  • Paranoid - worrying that people do not like you and are trying to harm you, although you have no proof of this
  • Reluctant - not willing to do something
  • Leverage - the power to make someone do what you want
  • Elsewhere - in or to another place or other places
  • Peninsula - a long piece of land that is mostly surrounded by water, but is joined at one end to a larger area of land
  • Viable - able to be done, or worth doing
  • Carrots and sticks - a mixture of promises and threats to persuade someone to do something, especially to work harder
  • Gradually - slowly and in small stages or amounts
  • Advocate - to publicly support a particular policy or way of doing things
  • Roll back - to remove something, or to reduce the influence of something
  • Predecessor - the person who had a job or official position before someone else
  • Unequivocally - clearly (without doubt)
