Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Sorrowful song: on Assam's flood situation"
  • Sorrowful - feeling, expressing, or causing great sadness
  • Longer-term - continuing to exist, or have an effect for a long time in the future
  • Life-sustaining - serving to continue or support life
  • Stirring - causing strong emotions
  • Rendition - a particular way of performing a song, poem, piece of music etc
  • Grit - courage and determination despite difficulty
  • Furious - extremely angry
  • Plains - a large flat area of land
  • Death toll - the number of people who are killed on a particular occasion
  • Put off -  to make someone not want to do something, or to make someone not like someone or something
  • Stride - a long confident step
  • Displace - to force someone to leave their own country and live somewhere else

  • Course - the direction in which a river flows
  • Tendency - a strong chance that something will happen in a particular way
  • Overrun - to be present in a place in such large amounts or numbers that it is dangerous or unpleasant
  • Bank - a raised area of land along the side of a river
  • Sediment - a layer of a substance that forms at the bottom of a liquid
  • River bed - the bottom of a river, where the ground is
  • Aberrant - not normal or not what you would usually expect
  • Intensive - designed to produce as much food as possible from an area of land
  • Massive - very large or heavy
  • Basin - a large area of land whose surface water all flows into a particular river or lake
  • Precipitation - the process by which a solid substance separates, or is separated from, a liquid it is in
  • Aggressive - used to describe a very strong treatment for a serious condition
  • Extensively -  clearly (involving a lot of details and information)
  • Insight - a chance to understand something or learn more about it
  • Remote sensing - the collection of information by watching or filming something from space or from a plane
  • Vulnerable - weak or easy to hurt
  • Remedial - intended to improve or correct something
  • Concern - a feeling of worry about something, especially one that a lot of people have about an important issue
  • Phenomenon - an event or situation that can be seen to happen or exist
  • Vital - very important, necessary, or essential
  • On the ground - in the place being discussed, especially a place where there is a war or another serious situation
  • Confine - to keep an activity within particular limits
  • Rehabilitation - the process of returning something to a good condition
  • Restoration - the process of putting something into its original condition
  • Infrastructure - the set of systems within a place or organization that affect how well it operates, for example the telephone and transport systems in a country
  • Embankment - a sloping wall of earth or stone beside a road, railway, or river
  • Conflict - angry disagreement between people or groups
  • Ethnicity - a large group of people who have the same national, racial, or cultural origins, or the state of belonging to such a group
  • Vis-à-vis - compared to or relating to someone or something
  • Dreadful - very unpleasant
  • Sambar - a dark brown woodland deer
  • Perished - died, usually because of an illness or something that happens suddenly

  • Speculation - ideas or discussion about why something has happened or what might happen
  • There is no denying - used for saying that something is clearly true
  • Stint - a period of time spent doing something
  • Overshadow - to be a negative feature or influence that spoils something
  • Doughty - determined, brave, and unwilling ever to stop trying to achieve something
  • Excel - to do something extremely well
  • Mighty - very large, powerful, or impressive
  • Astute - good at judging situations and people quickly and able to use this knowledge for personal benefit
  • Heartening - to make someone feel happier and more hopeful
  • Consultant -  an expert or a professional person whose job is to give help and advice on a particular subject
  • Respectively - (of two or more items) with each relating to something previously mentioned, in the same order as first mentioned
  • Legend - someone who very many people know about and admire
  • Mentor - an experienced person who helps someone who has less experience, especially in their job
  • Strategising - to think of a detailed plan for achieving success in situations such as war, politics, business, industry, or sport
  • Embark on - to start a new project or activity
  • Overseas - happening or existing in a country across the sea from your country
  • Immense - extremely large
  • Whispering campaign - the intentional damaging of an important person's reputation by saying unpleasant things about them that may not be true
  • Unleash -  to do or to cause something that has a very powerful or harmful effect
