Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "A welcome sale: Air India disinvestment"
  • Disinvestment - to sell your shares in a company or to stop taking part in a business activity
  • In-principle approval - used for saying that you agree / disagree with something as a result of your moral, religious, or political beliefs
  • Subsidiary - a company that is owned by a larger company
  • Long-standing - having existed for a long time
  • Reform - a change that is intended to correct a situation that is wrong or unfair, or make a system work more effectively
  • Checklist - a list of all the things you need to do or consider
  • Rationale - the set of reasons that something such as a plan or belief is based on
  • Shovel in - to put large quantities of something
  • Afloat - able to pay the money that you owe
  • Cater to something - to provide people with something they want or need, especially something unusual or special
  • Bankrupt - a person or business that is bankrupt has officially admitted that they have no money and cannot pay what they owe
  • Infrastructure - the set of systems within a place or organization that affect how well it operates, for example the telephone and transport systems in a country
  • Starved of - prevented from having enough of what you need
  • Bailout - money that someone gives or lends to a person or organization with financial problems
  • Alliance - an arrangement between two or more people, groups, or countries by which they agree to work together to achieve something
  • Turnaround - an important change in a situation that causes it to improve
  • Asset - something such as money or property that a person or company owns
  • Liability - the amount of money that a company owes
  • Creditor - a person or company that is owed money by another person or company
  • Write off - to say officially that someone does not have to pay an amount of money
  • Divest - to take away someone’s power, rights, or authority
  • Eventual - happening or existing at the end of a process or period of time
  • Courageous - very brave and determined
  • Gradual - slowly by small amounts
  • Domestic - relating to the country being talked about, and not other countries
  • Bid - to offer a particular amount of money for something
  • Aviation - related to making or flying planes
  • Panel - a group of people who make decisions or judgments
  • Vital - very important, necessary, or essential
  • Relatively - in comparison with someone or something similar

  • Grassroots - relating to or involving ordinary people, especially in politics
  • Democracy - a system of government in which people vote in elections to choose the people who will govern them
  • Restructuring - the act of organizing a company, business, or system in a new way to make it operate more effectively
  • Tricky - difficult to do
  • Province - one of many areas into which some countries are divided
  • Plains - a large flat area of land
  • Council -  the elected officials who govern a local area such as a city or county
  • Distant - far away from the place where you are
  • Steadfastly - strongly and without stopping
  • Amendment - a change made to a law or agreement
  • Dweller - someone who lives in a particular type of place
  • Proposition - something or someone that you have to deal with
  • Turnout - the number of people who come to an event
  • Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it
  • Yearning - a strong feeling that you get when you want something very much
  • Boycott - to not take part in an event
  • Field - to deal with something 
  • Consolidate - to make the power, position, or achievements you already have stronger or more effective so that they are likely to continue
  • Articulate - able to express your thoughts, arguments, and ideas clearly and effectively
  • Agitation - an attempt to cause social or political changes by arguing or protesting, or through other activities
  • Blockade - an official action that is intended to prevent people or goods from moving from one place to another
  • Strident - expressing or expressed in forceful language that does not try to avoid upsetting other people
  • Consensus - agreement among all the people involved
  • Realign - to change the way in which something such as a system or institution is organized
  • Delineate - to decide or show the exact limits of something
  • Desperate - very serious
  • Elite - a small group of people who have a lot of advantages and keep the most power and influence
  • Bureaucracy - a complicated and annoying system of rules and processes
  • Threat - a situation or an activity that could cause harm or danger
  • Tactic - a particular method or plan for achieving something
  • Requisite - necessary for a particular purpose
  • Misread - to understand or judge a person or situation wrongly
  • Amendment - a change made to a law or agreement
