Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Powered by a pause: delay in Indo-U.S. nuclear deal"

  • Obstacle - a difficulty or problem that prevents you from achieving something
  • Owing to - because of
  • Procedural - relating to a procedure, especially a legal one
  • Ratifying - to make an agreement official by signing it or formally accepting it
  • Sets back - to delay the progress of someone or something
  • Circumstance - a fact or condition that affects a situation
  • Bankruptcy - a situation in which a person or business has officially admitted that they have no money and cannot pay what they owe
  • Overrun - to take more time, space, or money than was intended
  • Precarious - in a dangerous state because of not being safe or not being held in place firmly
  • Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it
  • Bailout - the act of helping a person or organization that is in difficulty, usually by giving or giving or lending money
  • Collaboration - to work with someone else for a special purpose
  • Indigenous - naturally existing in a place or country rather than arriving from another place
  • Acquisition - to buy / get something
  • Concern - a feeling of worry about something, especially one that a lot of people have about an important issue
  • Tsunami - a very large wave or series of waves caused when something such as an earthquake moves a large quantity of water in the sea
  • Scenario - a description of possible actions or events in the future
  • Outweighed - to be greater or more important than something else
  • Determination - the ability to continue trying to do something, although it is very difficult
  • Fossil - old fashioned ideas
  • Renewable energy - renewable energy and natural materials replace themselves by natural processes, so that they are never completely used up
  • Collapse - to suddenly fall down
  • Viable - able to work as intended or able to succeed
  • Dimmed - not likely to succeed
  • Cost-effective - giving the most profit or advantage in exchange for the amount of money that is spent
  • Ruling - a decision
  • Meltdown - an extremely dangerous situation in a nuclear power station in which the nuclear fuel becomes very hot and melts through its container and escapes into the environment
  • Sobering - making you feel serious or think about serious matters
  • Breathing space - a period of rest in order to increase strength or give you more time to think about what to do next
  • Balance sheet - a statement that shows the value of a company's assets (= things of positive value) and its debts

  • Democracy - a system of government in which people vote in elections to choose the people who will govern them

  • Casting doubts - to make people feel less sure about or have less trust in something or someone
  • Vague - not clearly or fully explained
  • Compromise - to risk having a harmful effect on something
  • Stand- alone - a stand-alone computer or machine can operate on its own without needing help from another similar thing
  • Preside - to be in charge of an official meeting, ceremony, or other event
  • Sceptic - someone who has doubts about things that other people think are true or right
  • Manipulation - controlling someone or something to your own advantage, often unfairly or dishonestly
  • Monitoring - to regularly test / check something
  • Tamper-proof - impossible to change
  • Audit - to make an official examination of the accounts of a business and produce a report
  • Corroborating - to support what someone says by giving information or evidence that agrees with them
  • Tallied - to match or agree with something else
  • Constituency - one of the official areas of a country that elects someone to represent it in a parliament or legislature
  • Prima facie - based on what seems to be true, before a situation has been examined in detail
  • Subject to - to have or experience a particular thing, especially something unpleasant
  • Enhance - to improve the quality, amount, or strength of something
  • Tangible - real and not imaginary; able to be shown, touched, or experienced
  • Ballot - a system or occasion of secret voting
  • Incidence - an event, or the rate at which something happens
  • Inadvertent - not intentional
  • Statistical - relating to a group of numbers that represent facts or that describe a situation
  • Runner-up - a person who comes second in a race or competition
  • Robust - strong and successful
  • Criticise - to express disapproval of someone or something
