Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "The IS challenge"

  • Striking roots - to become fixed or established / to increase and spread
  • Suspected - a suspected criminal is one who the courts have not yet proved guilty
  • Coincidentally - used for saying that something happens by chance
  • Drone strike - an occasion when a place is hit by a bomb dropped from a drone (an aircraft that does not have a pilot but is controlled by someone on the ground)
  • Allegation - a statement that someone has done something wrong or illegal even though this has not been proved
  • Handful - a very small number of people or things
  • Thrives - to become very successful
  • Jihadist - a Muslim who is fighting for Islam, especially a radical (= someone with extreme views) who believes in using violence to achieve religious and political aims
  • Caliphate - an Islamic state, especially one ruled by a single religious and political leader
  • Tactic - a planned way of doing something
  • Urging - to advise someone very strongly about what action or attitude they should take
  • Sympathisers - someone who approves of and supports someone or something
  • Stronghold - a place where people fighting an enemy can defend or organize themselves
  • Allegiance - loyalty and support for a ruler, country, group, or belief
  • Caliph - a Muslim ruler
  • Insulate - to protect someone from harmful experiences
  • Puritanical - having strict moral and religious beliefs and not approving of pleasure, for example in sexual activity, entertainment, or eating and drinking
  • One-size-fits-all - a one-size-fits-all system or solution is considered to be suitable for a wide range of situations or problems
  • Resonance - an emotional effect produced by something that reminds you of something else
  • Syncretic - combining different and often contradictory beliefs in philosophy or religion
  • Lone- wolf - a terrorist who prepares and commits violent acts alone
  • Pose - to present a difficult or dangerous situation
  • Madrasa - a college where students are taught about Islam
  • Propaganda-  information, ideas, opinions, or images, often only giving one part of an argument, that are broadcast, published, or in some other way spread with the intention of influencing people's opinions
  • Significant - very important
  • Desperate - very worried and angry because you do not know how to deal with an unpleasant situation
  • Outreach - the extent or length of reaching out.
  • Foothold - a position from which you can improve your status or become more successful in an organization, profession, or market
  • Coordination - the process of organizing people or things in order to make them work together effectively
  • Countering - to reply to a criticism or statement that you disagree with
  • Radicalisation - the process by which a person or group comes to hold more extreme views
  • Isolated - happening only once, or existing only in one place
  • Blow something out of proportion - to treat a particular event or problem far too seriously
  • Bigotry - the practice of having very strong and unreasonable opinions, especially about politics, race, or religion, and refusing to consider other people’s opinions

  • Inherent - an inherent quality is a basic or essential feature that gives something its character
  • Benignity - kindness or tolerance toward others
  • Immigrant - someone who comes to live in a country from another country
  • Racial - happening between people of different races
  • Racial discrimination - unfair treatment of someone because of their race
  • Gay - sexually attracted to people of the same sex and not to people of the opposite sex
  • Turned out - to have a particular result
  • Underestimate - to think that someone has less power or ability than they really have
  • Tendency - a strong chance that something will happen in a particular way
  • Recreate - to make something exist or happen again
  • Cocoon - something that keeps you safe, but may stop you from learning to deal with problems
  • Devastated - feeling very shocked and upset
  • Assassination - the murder of a famous or important person, especially for political reasons
  • Riot - a violent protest by a crowd of people
  • Tragic - causing or involving great sadness, because someone suffers or dies
  • Disciple - someone who admires a famous person such as a political or religious leader and is influenced by them
  • Balm - something that makes you feel calm and relaxed
  • Catastrophe - an event that causes a lot of damage or makes a lot of people suffer
  • Reassuring - making you feel less worried
  • Fantasy - a pleasant, exciting, or unusual experience that you imagine is happening to you
  • Turned out - to be discovered to be something, have something etc
  • Kept at bay - to prevent something serious, dangerous, or unpleasant from affecting you
  • Boycott - to not take part in an event, or to not buy or use something as a protest
  • Disrespect - to treat someone without respect
  • Inhumane - treating people or animals in a very cruel way
  • Immigrant - someone who comes to live in a country from another country
  • Grim - grim news, situations, or events are unpleasant and make you feel upset and worried
