Hello everyone, in our Lesson 24, we learnt about the prefixes En and EmEn, Em  represent the meanings in, into and towardsToday we shall see the prefix epi. Happy Reading :)

Day 25 : Epi

  • epi - upon; in addition; above
Let's try to understand this with some examples
  • epiphyte (noun) = a plant growing on another plant
    • epi - Prefix = upon
    • phyte (phuton) - Root = plant
  • epidemic (noun) = a spreading among the people
    • epi - Prefix = upon
    • dem (demos) - Root = people
    • ic - Suffix = relating to
Let's have a look at some more words with epi prefixes, for better understanding.

  • epicarp    = the above (outer) layer of the fruit
  • epidermis = outer layer of skin
  • epigraph = a quotation placed in addition to a work to suggest theme
  • episode    =  a sigle event or a period of time in somebody's life, a novel etc
  • epithet = an expression which gives a good description
  • epiepitaph = an inscription on a gravestone
  • epilogue = the concluding section of a work
  • epithalamium = a poem in honor of bride and groom
  • epigram = a short saying or poem that expresses an idea in a clever, funny way
  • epitomize = to be a perfect example of a quality or type of thing
  • epicenter = the point on the earth's surface directly above the origin of an earthquake

Try to guess the meanings of the following elements.
