National Current Affairs
  • Andhra Pradesh has topped the list of states with the highest employability as per the India Skills Report 2019.
    • It is a joint initiative of Wheebox, a Global Talent Assessment Company, PeopleStrong, a leading HR Tech Company and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), and supported and backed by renowned partners like United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
    • The employability levels of B.Tech / B.E have increased across all the sectors, touching a new high of 63.11 per cent (it was 42.08 per cent last year).
    • The emplopyability levels of MBA and polytechnic stood low between 47.18 per cent and 45.90 per cent.

Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Ministry of Home Affairs has authorised Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of Public Sectors Banks to request for lookout circulars against wilful defaulters in order to prevent them from leaving the country.
    • This move will enable public sector banks to inform authorities to stop defaulters from fleeing even before a First Information Report is registered.
    • This comes after a recommendation from a committee headed by Financial Services Secretary Rajiv Kumar.
  • Ujjivan Small Finance Bank, a wholly owned subsidiary of Ujjivan Financial Services Limited, launched personal loan facility for salaried professionals making it the 1st small finance bank in India to offer this.
    • The personal loan will be available for salaried professionals who are earning a monthly salary above Rs 15,000
    • Individuals can avail loans starting from Rs 50,000 up to Rs 15 lakhs.
Science & Technology
  • Astronomers at Hawaii's Keck Observatory announced that they have detected water in the atmosphere of a planet 129 light-years away from the Earth. 
    • The discovery was made while studying a young giant gas planet called HR 8799c, which is about 7 times the mass of Jupiter and has a radius that is 20% larger.
Deaths
  • Former Indian hockey player, Sandeep Michael (33), who captained the Indian junior team to a Gold at the Asia Cup 2003, died after battling an unspecified neurological problem. 
  • Classical music stalwart Ustad Imrat Khan (83), who dedicated his life to propagating the Sitar and the Surbahar worldwide, passed away. 
    • He belonged to the illustrious Etawa Gharana, or the Imdadkhani Gharana, named after his grandfather Ustad Imdad Khan. 
    • He had also performed at the Cannes Film Festival in 1970.
New Appointments
  • The State Bank of Mauritius (SBM), which has received a licence as a scheduled commercial bank in India,  has appointed Sidharth Rath as its Managing Director (MD)
    • Prior to this assignment, he was with Axis Bank as the Group Executive and Head, of Corporate, Transaction Banking and International Banking.
    • Note : SBM Bank is the 1st foreign bank to set up a Wholly Owned Subsidiary (WOS), to provide universal banking service with a focus on Wholesale Banking, Trade Finance, Capital Market and Retail Banking.
    • UNICEF - United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund
  • The Centre today appointed Vijay Kumar Dev, a 1987-batch IAS officer, as the Chief Secretary of Delhi
    • Dev will replace Anshu Prakash who was transferred to the Department of Telecommunications last week.
  • Popular singer Nahid Afrin of Assam has been appointed as the 1st ‘Youth Advocate’ of the north eastern region by the UNICEF to fight for child rights. 
    • Note : The UNICEF engages ‘Youth Advocates’ to harness their voice as agents of change in society. 
Sports Current Affairs
  • India's Mary Kom has become the 1st ever boxer to win six AIBA Women's World Boxing Championship titles
    • She achieved the feat by defeating Hanna Okhota (Ukraine) in the final of the 48-kg category in Delhi today. 
    • She had previously won world championship gold medals in 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2010.
  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) today announced that the World T20 will be called T20 World Cup from the 2020 edition onwards. 
    • The renaming of the event is aimed at cementing the importance this event holds in the international cricket calendar and ensuring parity across all three formats of the game.
