National Current Affairs
- India's first specialized hospital for Elephants was inaugurated by Agra Divisional Commissioner Anil Kumar in Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh.
- This hospital offers laser therapy, hydrotherapy, quarantine facilities and has a medical hoist to lift elephants.
- It also has an observation deck that allows veterinary students and interns to observe elephants' behaviour.
- The Women and Child Development Ministry has approved setting up over 1000 Fast Track Special Courts to dispose off pending cases of rape and POCSO Act across the country.
- The project has a total financial implication of over 767 crore rupees.
- What is POCSO Act ?
- POCSO or The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012 was established to protect the children against offences like sexual abuse, sexual harassment and pornography.
- It was formed to provide a child-friendly system for trial underneath which the perpetrators could be punished.
- The Act defines a child as any person below eighteen years of age.
- The Gujarat government today announced that the Statue of Unity will get air and railway connectivity soon.
Science & Technology
- Scientists today unanimously voted to redefine Kilogram, retiring the 130 year old platinum alloy cylinder conceived in Paris in 1889.
- Redefined by the Planck constant, the new system determines the unit of mass through the electrical force needed to counteract the weight of a kilogram on a Kibble balance.
- Important Note : The changes will come into effect from May 20, 2019, World Metrology Day.
- The trial run of India's first engine-less train, Train 18, was successfully conducted today on a standard railway track of Bareilly-Moradabad section, New Dwlhi.
- The fully air-conditioned 16-coach train, built at a cost of ₹100 crore in 18 months, can run at a speed of around 160 kmph.
- The train will cut travel time by 15% as compared to Shatabdi Express.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- The International Energy Agency in its latest report titled ‘World Energy Outlook’ stated that India will overtake the U.S. to become the world’s 2nd-biggest emitter of carbon dioxide from the power sector before 2030. .
- Carbon dioxide emissions from India’s power sector are expected to rise nearly 80 per cent by 2040 as power use almost triples.
- Note : China will remain the biggest emitter.

- On the occasion of the National Press Day (16th November 2018), Finance Minister Arun Jaitley conferred the 'Raja Ram Mohan Roy' Award to eminent journalist and former Editor The Hindu, N Ram.
- Ruby Sarkar (Chief Correspondent, Deshbandhu, Bhopal) and Rajesh Parshuram Joshte (Daily Pudhari, Ratnagiri) were given the 'Award for 'Rural Journalism'.
- V S Rajesh (Deputy Editor, Kerala Kaumudi) was awarded in the 'Development Reporting' Category.
- Subhash Paul (Rashtriya Sahara, Delhi) was given the award for 'Photo Journalism-Single News Picture'.
Deaths
- Brigadier Kuldip Singh Chandpuri (78), who served as a Major during the 1971 India-Pakistan war, passed away after battling cancer.
- Note : Based on the Battle of Longewala, JP Dutta's 1997 film 'Border' portrayed Chandpuri in lead, played by Sunny Deol.
- Indian theatre personality and Padma Shri awardee Ad film maker Alyque Padamsee (90) passed away.
- He is credited with iconic ads like Hamara Bajaj and Liril soap.
- He is also known for portraying Muhammad Ali Jinnah in the 1982 film 'Gandhi'.
- Note : He is widely called the Brand Father of Indian advertising
New Appointments
- Ibrahim Mohamed Solih today sworn-in as the new President of the island nation Maldives.
- Indian Prime ministe Narendra Modi attended the oath taking ceremony as the chief guest.
- Note : This is Modi's 1st visit to the Island Nation. Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh was the last Indian PM to visit Maldives in November 2011.
- Google has announced that Kerala-born former Oracle product chief Thomas Kurian will be the new head of the company's cloud division.
- Kurian is going to replace Diane Greene on 26th November 2018.
- Justice Govind Mathur took oath as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court.
- The oath was administered by Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik in a simple ceremony in the court room of chief justice.
- The Women and Child Development Ministry (WCD) has nominated 3 people to be Members of the National Commission for Women (NCW). They are :
- Chandramukhi Devi
- Soso Shaiza
- Kamlesh Gautam
Sports Current Affairs
- India’s Pankaj Advani won his 3rd straight IBSF billiards crown in the 150-up format by defeating Myanmar's Nay Thway Oo.
- This win also marks a hat-trick of wins for Advani in the shorter format.
- English professional footballer Joe Cole announced his retirement after making more than 700 appearances for seven clubs including West Ham and Chelsea.
- Cole was part of England’s “Golden Generation”, playing alongside David Beckham, Wayne Rooney etc.
