International Current Affairs
  • The joint military exercise between India and Russia "INDRA 2018" will begin on 18th November 2018 at Babina Field Firing Ranges, Babina Military Station Jhansi (Uttar Pradesh). 
    • Aim of INDRA 2018 : Combating insurgency under the aegis of United Nations (UN) 
    • The 11-day long training exercise will see participation of about 250 servicemen of motorised infantry units of Russia's Eastern Military District and a mechanised infantry battalion of India.
    • The objective of this exercise is to provide an opportunity to the armed forces of both countries to train in counter-terrorism operations in a multinational scenario. 
  • A 4-day regional meeting of World Customs Organisation (WCO) was recently held in Jaipur (Rajasthan).  
    • The meeting was jointly chaired by WCO Deputy Secretary General Ricardo Travino and Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs Chairman S Ramesh.
    • It was attended by representatives of 33 member countries of Asia.

  • Jharkhand is celebrating the birth anniversary of noted freedom fighter Birsa Munda & 19th State Formation Day.

  • The Karnataka government has proposed to build a 125-foot tall statue of Mother Cauvery in Krishnarajasagara Reservoir in Mandya district. 
    • The project includes a museum and two glass towers measuring 360 feet to provide a bird's eye view of the reservoir. 
  • The Shri Ramayana Express, a train covering key destinations associated with Lord Ram's life, was flagged off today from the Safdarjung Railway Station in Delhi
    • The 800-seat train will reach Tamil Nadu in 16 days, following which passengers can fly to Sri Lanka for the second leg of the tour. Stops in India include Ayodhya and Hanuman Garhi Ramkot.
  • Uttar Pradesh Government has approved renaming of Faizabad and Allahabad divisions as Ayodhya and Prayagraj respectively.
    • The decision was taken at meeting of state cabinet presided over by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in state capital Lucknow. 
  • Delhi Police has launched an e-learning portal  titled ‘Nipun’ to impart training and provide up to date information to police officers. 
    • The initiative is aimed at imparting in-service online training and information to police personnel through specialised courses available online which have been designed by experts in various fields.
  • Union Ministry off Human Resource Development has launched two new initiatives titled LEAP and ARPIT  for higher education faculty.
    • LEAP - Leadership for Academicians Programme
    • ARPIT - Annual Refresher Programme In Teaching  
  • The 6th Indian Social Work Congress was held in New Delhi.
    • It was joinly organized by National Association of Professional Social Workers in India (NAPSWI) and Department of Social Work (Delhi School of Social Work), University of Delhi.
    • Theme of 6th ISWC 2018 : “Human Development and Social Inclusion: Imperatives for Social Work Education and Practice”.
    • Note : Dr. Martha Farrell posthumously honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award during this edition of congress for her lifelong work towards gender equality, women’s empowerment and prevention of sexual harassment at workplace.
MOUs & Agreements
  • India and United Kingdom have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for collaboration in cancer research.   
    • Both countries also launched a British Pounds 10 million (current value of ₹ 93 crore) collaborative research programme that will address issues of affordability, prevention and care of cancer by bringing together Indian and UK experts across clinical research.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Mumbai based IndusInd Bank has launched 1st interactive Credit Card in India with buttons titled Nexxt Credit Card.  
    • It will give customer multiple options on how to make a payment using his or her Credit Card. 
    • This Card has been created in partnership with Pittsburgh USA headquartered Dynamics Inc., which designs and manufactures intelligent, battery powered payment cards
  • China's largest lender ICBC's Indian unit has set up a $200-million fund for investing in small and medium-sized Indian businesses.
    • Chinese venture capital funds may also invest up to $30 million in 7-8 Indian startups, it added. Small businesses, accounting for 32% of Indian economy, are the second-biggest job providers in India after farming.

  • Private sector lender Yes Bank's Non-Executive Chairman Ashok Chawla has resigned with immediate effect. 
    • Note : Chawla, who is also the Chairman of NSE, was named by CBI in a chargesheet related to the Aircel-Maxis case.

  • On the occasion of its 10th anniversary, the Infosys Science Foundation (ISF) has announced six winners of the Infosys Prize 2018.
    • The winners are :
      • Engineering and Computer Science : Navakanta Bha
      • Humanities : Kavita Singh
      • Life Sciences : Roop Mallik
      • Mathematical Sciences : Nalini Anantharaman
      • Physical Sciences : S K Satheesh
      • Social Sciences : Sendhil Mullainathan 
    • About Infosys Prize :
      • Infosys Prize is an annual award bestowed upon researchers, scientists, social scientists and engineers in India by the Infosys Science Foundation (ISF). 
      • It is given to six categories Life Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Engineering and Computer Science, Social Sciences, Physical Sciences and Humanities. 
      • Each category awardee receives 22-carat gold medallion, a citation certificate and prize money of US $100,000. 
      • Important Note : It is one of the highest monetary awards in India that recognizes the scientific research.
