International Current Affairs
  • Today (13th November) is World Kindness Day.
    • This day was introduced in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement a coalition of nations kindness NGOs, aiming for more kindness in the world.
    • This day encourages individuals to overlook boundaries, race and religion.
  • The inaugural edition of India, Indonesia Bilateral Naval Exercise ‘Samudra Shakti’ was started today at the Surabaya port, Indonesia. 
    • Aim of Samudra Shakti : To strengthen bilateral relations, expand maritime co-operation, enhance interoperability and exchange best practices.
National Current Affairs
  • Twitter India has launched #PowerOf18 campaign aimed at encouraging youth to contribute in public debates and participate in civic engagement for the 2019 general elections.
    • This campaign will serve as resource for young Indians to find more information about elections, support social causes they are passionate about and join public conversation.
  • PM Narendra Modi today inaugurated the 1st of the four multi-modal 'Inland Waterways Terminal' at Varanasi, which is being built on Ganga. 
    • This project will allow commercial navigation of vessels with 1,500-2,000 deadweight tonnes (DWT) capacity on the River Ganga.
  • The Boards of Governors of the 20 Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) would be reconstituted by December 15, as per IIM Act 2017, with the HRD Ministry approving the process today.
  • The Medical Council of India has decided to change the syllabus of MBBS undergraduate courses with more classes on mental health, public health, and communication skills
    • The new course, to be implemented from the academic year 2019, will also focus on counselling patients and their relatives about organ donation and students will be examined on their ability to handle patients.
Awards & Honors
  • Indian freelance journalist, Swati Chaturvedi,  famous for her investigative reports, has bagged the 2018 London Press Freedom Award for Courage.  
    • She was honored with this award for her work in exposing the ‘IT cell’ within the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for keeping an army of angry trolls.
    • She is the author of the book ‘I am a Troll: Inside the Secret World of the BJP’s Digital Army’.
  • London-based non-governmental organization Amnesty International has withdrawn a prestigious human rights award from Aung San Suu Kyi, following what it described as a “shameful betrayal” of the values she once stood for.
    • Note : It is the latest in a series of accolades to be withdrawn from Aung San Suu Kyi, including the US Holocaust Museum’s Elie Weisel award and Freedom of the City awards, which were revoked by Edinburgh, Oxford, Glasgow and Newcastle.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Complying with US sanctions, global provider of secure financial messaging services, SWIFT, has cut several Iranian banks, including the country's central bank, off from its services. 
    • This comes after the US warned that penalties would be applied to firms that refused to comply with the sanctions.
    • The disconnection makes it difficult for Iran to settle import and export bills.
  • Natural gas is expected to overtake coal as the world's second largest energy source after oil by 2030 due to a drive to cut air pollution and the rise in liquefied natural gas use, the International Energy Agency has announced in it's recent report. 
    • It further said that global gas demand would be 45% higher by 2040 than today.

  • Flipkart Group CEO Binny Bansal today announced his resignation from the role. 
    • His decision follows an independent investigation done on behalf of Flipkart and Walmart into an allegation of serious personal misconduct.
Deaths
  • American comic-book writer and Marvel Comics co-creator Stan Lee (95) passed away
    • Mr Lee is credited with co-creating several fictional characters including Spider-Man, the Hulk, Doctor Strange, the X-Men, Iron Man, and Thor
New Appointments
  • US technology giant Apple has appointed Finnish company Nokia's Chief Customer Operations Officer (CCOO) Ashish Chowdhary as the new Country Manager for India
    • He is going to replace Michel Coulomb.
  • The Nepal government nominated Nilambar Acharya, the former Law Minister and senior politician, as Ambassador to India
    • He will replace Deep Kumar Upadhyay who resigned October last year.
