  • Fault lines - a problem that may not be obvious and could cause something to fail
  • Draft - something such as a plan, letter, or drawing that may have changes made to it before it is finished
  • Petition - an official document in which you ask a court to take legal action
  • Bench - the position of being a judge in a court of law
  • Petitioner - someone who organizes or signs a petition asking someone in authority to do something
  • Activist - someone who takes part in activities that are intended to achieve political or social change, especially someone who is a member of an organization
  • Migrant - someone who travels to another place or country in order to find work
  • Deport - to send someone out of a country, usually because they do not have a legal right to be there
  • Maintain - to continue to say that something is true, even if other people do not believe you

  • Insurgent - someone who belongs to a group of people fighting to take control of their country by force
  • Quell - to cause a violent situation to end
  • Concede - to stop trying to win a war, competition, or argument because you realize that you cannot win it
  • Vital - very important, necessary, or essential
  • Bureaucratic - involving a lot of complicated rules, details, and processes
  • Deportation - a situation in which someone is deported from a country
  • Fraught - very worried and with a lot of problems
  • Antecedent - something that happened or existed before something else and is similar to it in some way
  • Notwithstanding - despite something
  • Legitimacy - the fact that something is legal
  • Embark on - to start a new project or activity, usually one that will be difficult and will take time
  • Impact - an effect, or an influence
  • Unanimity - complete agreement among all the members of a group
  • Reconciliation - a new and friendly relationship with someone who you argued with or fought with
  • Cognisant - understanding or realizing something

  • Former - used for describing someone or something that had a particular job, title, status etc in the past, but not now

  • Polarisation - the act of dividing something, especially something that contains different people or opinions, into two completely separate groups
  • Rival - a person, team, or business that competes with another
  • Garner - to collect or obtain a large amount of something useful or important

  • Adequate - good enough or large enough for a particular purpose
  • Latitude - freedom to use your own methods and judgment in doing something

  • Generous - giving people more of your time or money than is usual or expected
  • Welfare - the health and happiness of people
  • Electorate - all the people who are allowed to vote in an election

  • Sleaze - behaviour that is dishonest or immoral, especially in politics or business
  • Reluctant - not willing to do something
  • Throw your weight - to use your authority to tell other people what to do in a rude and unpleasant way
  • Candidacy - the fact that someone is a candidate in an election
  • Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it
  • Perception - a particular way of understanding or thinking about something
  • Reinvent - to change something that already exists and give it a different form or purpose
  • Reform - a change that is intended to correct a situation that is wrong or unfair, or make a system work more effectively
  • Bloated - a bloated organization or system is not effective because it is too large or has too many workers
  • Allegedly - if someone allegedly does something, another person says that they have done it, even though this has not been proved
  • Privileged - having advantages and opportunities that other people do not have, because you have a lot of money or high social status
  • Benefit of the doubt - to treat someone as if their behaviour is honest or correct, even though you are not certain that it is

  • Dictatorship - government by someone who takes power by force and does not allow elections
  • Well-known - known by many people or by the people involved in a particular situation
  • Frontrunner - the person or thing considered the most likely to win a competition, game, election etc
  • Misogynistic - showing feelings of hating women or a belief that men are better than women
  • Homophobic - hate or fear of homosexuals
  • Racist - someone who does not like or respect people who belong to races that are different from their own and who believes their race is better than others
  • Water down - to make something such as a statement or newspaper article less offensive, powerful, or detailed
  • Trigger-happy - likely to use weapons or start an attack, especially when it is not necessary
  • Instinct - a natural tendency to behave in a particular way that people and animals are born with and that they obey without knowing why
  • Tolerance - the attitude of someone who is willing to accept someone else’s beliefs, way of life etc without criticizing them even if they disagree with them
  • Venality - the state or quality of being venal (= willing to behave dishonestly in exchange for money)

  • Crack down - to start dealing with someone or something much more strictly
  • Moderating - to make something less extreme, or to become less extreme
  • Stance - an attitude or view about an issue that you state clearly
  • Mindful - careful about or conscious of something
  • Alienation - the process of making someone dislike you, or not want to help or support you
  • Core - the most important or most basic part of something
  • Constituency - the voters in a division of a country who elect a representative to parliament
