International Current Affairs
  • International Day of Democracy, an annual United Nations initiative, is being observed today.
    • Theme of International Day of Democracy 2018 : "Democracy under Strain: Solutions for a Changing World"
  • India has climbed up one spot to rank 130 out of 189 countries in the latest Human Development Index (HDI) released by the United Nations Development Programme. 
    • Top 5 Countries in the Index 
      1. Norway, 
      2. Switzerland, 
      3. Australia, 
      4. Ireland 
      5. Germany 
    • Bottom 5 Countries in the Index 
      1. Niger, 
      2. The Central African Republic, 
      3. South Sudan, 
      4. Chad 
      5. Burundi  
  • India has been included in the UN's list of 38 "shameful" nations for intimidating people cooperating with the global body on human rights. 
    • The annual report accused these countries of torturing, killing victims and their human rights defenders, and also carrying out surveillance against them. 
    • Note : China, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Israel have also been included in the list.
  • North and South Koreas today opened a Liaison office in the North Korean city of Kaesong for the first time since the Koreas were divided at the end of World War II in 1945. 
    • The office is aimed at facilitating better communication between the two countries.  
National Current Affairs
  • Today (15th September 2018) is 51st Engineer's Day
    • This day is celebrated every year in India since 1967 to commemorate the birthday of the legendary engineer Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. 
    • Theme of Engineers' Day 2018 : 'Engineering Challenges for Knowledge Era'.
  • To ensure a high standard of cleanliness across the country before Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary (2nd October), Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched 'Swachhata Hi Seva' movement
    • Note : 2nd October 2018 is also the day Swachh Bharat Mission completes 4 years.  
  • Union Cabinet chaired has approved proposal for introduction of Bill in Parliament for amendment of National Institutes of Design (NID) Act, 2014  for establishing four new NIDs across the country. These four new NIDs are :
    • National Institute of Design, Amaravati/Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. 
    • National Institute of Design, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. 
    • National Institute of Design, Jorhat, Assam. 
    • National Institute of Design, Kurukshetra, Haryana.  

Awards & Honors
  • Union Ministry of Water Resources has instituted National Water Awards with objective to encourage all stakeholders to manage their water resources efficiently and create water consciousness in the country. 
    • The awards will be given for 13 categories. They are :
      1. Best State.
      2. Best District.
      3. Best Village Panchayat.
      4. Best Municipal Corporation.
      5. Best research, innovation and adaptation of new technology for water conservation.
      6. Best educative and mass awareness efforts.
      7. Best TV show for promoting water conservation.
      8. Best Newspaper.
      9. Best School.
      10. Best Institution for successful campus water usage.
      11. Best Resident Welfare Association (RWA).
      12. Organizations for Best Religious and Recreational & Tourism Water Uses .
      13. Best Industry for industrial water conservation.  

Science & Technology
  • The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) today launched its most advanced space laser, ICESat-2, a $1-billion mission that will shoot lasers towards Earth to track the planet's melting ice. 
  • Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Trombay has recommissioned India’s oldest nuclear research reactor named ‘Apsara, which was shut down permanently in 2009 for repair. 
    • The refurbished version of this reactor has been named as ‘Apsara-upgraded’ (Apsara-U) and also has double capacity compared to its earlier version.  

MOUs & Agreements
  • Union Cabinet has approved MoU signed between Export-Import Bank of India (Exim Bank) and member banks under BRICS Interbank Cooperation Mechanism on Collaborative Research on Distributed Ledger and Block chain Technology in context of development of digital economy.
  • Union Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and Telecommunications Consultants India Ltd (TCIL) have signed agreement for implementation of e-VidyaBharati and e-AarogyaBharati (e-VBAB) Network Project in Africa. 
    • The project is seen as digital bridge of knowledge and health between India and Africa. 
    • It is also considered as important milestone in India’s development partnership with Africa.

  • Justice Mukul Mudgal, who headed the Supreme Court-appointed probe into the 2013 IPL spot-fixing scandal, has been named Chairman of the 11-member selection committee to pick this year's Dronacharya and Dhyanchand awardees.
