  • Fair - reasonable and morally right
  • Trial - the process of examining a case in a court of law and deciding whether someone is guilty or innocent
  • Warranted - necessary
  • Abduction - to take someone away from their home, family etc using force
  • Neighbouring - near each other
  • Ensure - to make certain that something happens or is done
  • Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it
  • Horrific - so shocking that it upsets you
  • Nomadic - moving from place to place rather than staying in one place
  • Sectarian - caused by disagreements among people from different religious groups
  • Contradiction - a difference in two or more statements, ideas, stories etc that makes it impossible for both or all of them to be true
  • Communal - relating to a particular community
  • Heckle - to interrupt with loud, unfriendly statements or questions
  • Charge sheet - an official record in which the police write down the names of people they have accused of a crime
  • Atmosphere - the mood or feeling that exists in a place and affects the people who are there
  • Vitiate - to make something less effective or legally acceptable
  • Fortunately - used for emphasizing that something good has happened
  • Countenance - to approve of something, or to allow something to happen
  • Probe - an attempt to find out the truth about an issue, problem, or accident
  • Inaction - the failure to do anything, especially when you should do something
  • Empower - to give someone more control over their life or more power to do something
  • Jurisdiction - the right or power to make legal decisions
  • Aggrieved  - feeling angry and unhappy because you think you have been treated in an unfair way
  • Solely - involving nothing except the person or thing mentioned
  • Victim - someone who has been harmed, injured, or killed as the result of a crime
  • Accused - a specific person that is accused of a crime in a court of law
  • Witness - someone who sees a crime, accident, or other event happen
  • In addition - used for adding an extra piece of information to what has already been said or written
  • Hearing - a meeting of a court of law or official organization to find out the facts about something
  • Adjournment - the temporary ending of a meeting or trial
  • Cross-examination - to ask a witness questions during a trial after another lawyer has already asked them questions
  • Prosecutor - a lawyer whose job is to prove in court that someone accused of a crime is guilty
  • Apex - the most important or top part of something
  • Instill - to make someone have a particular feeling or belief
  • Ensure - to make certain that something happens or is done
  • Guilty - someone who is guilty has committed a crime

  • Contentious - causing disagreement between people or groups
  • Balancing act - the process of trying to achieve something that different groups will all be satisfied with
  • Appetite - a feeling of being very interested in something or of wanting it very much
  • Picking fight - to intentionally start a fight
  • Dictatorship - government by someone who takes power by force and does not allow elections
  • Dwindling - to become gradually less or smaller over a period of time until almost nothing remains
