International Current Affairs
  • Today (4th May 2018) is International Firefighters' Day.
    • It was instituted after proposal emailed out across the world on January 4, 1999 due to the deaths of five firefighters in tragic circumstances in a wildfire in Australia. 
    • May 4 used to be a traditional Firefighters' Day in many European countries, because it is the day of Saint Florian, patron saint of firefighters.
  • The Afghan government today officially launched the distribution process of “e-tezkera” (Electronic Identity Cards).
    • The much delayed  system is intended to reduce fraud, streamline public administration and give a clearer picture of the population by centralizing data on one digitized card.
  • A Two-day bilateral meeting of Anti-Narcotics Agencies of India and Sri Lanka was held in New Delhi today.
    • During this meet, India and Sri Lanka have decided to enhance mutual cooperation to combat drug crimes.
National Current Affairs
  • The centre is planning to assign Green Registration Plates for Electric Vehicles, which will help in distinguishing them from other vehicles and giving them preferential treatment like special parking or discounted tolls. 
    • While private electric vehicles may have green plates with numbers and letters in white, the commercial ones will have numbers and letters written in yellow.
  • Google's philanthropic arm Google.org has announced $3 million in grants for Teacher training and educational content creation in India
    • The organisation committed $1 million to TheTeacherApp to help them reach 5,00,000 teachers in two years, besides a $2-million grant and technical assistance from YouTube to the Central Square Foundation. 
    • Last year, it gave grants worth $8.4 million to four NGOs.
Awards & Honors
  • The Nobel Foundation has decided to not award the Nobel Prize in Literature this year (2018) after it was embroiled in a scandal over sexual assault allegations
    • This year's winner will now be announced with the winner in 2019. 
    • Important Note : The committee's head and several other members have recently stepped down over claims of sexual harassment by a member's husband.
  • President Ram Nath Kovind presented the 65th National Film Awards at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi.
    • Late actress Sridevi was posthumously honoured with the Best Actress Award.
    • Over 50 winners boycotted the award ceremony, upset with President Ram Nath Kovind presenting awards to only 11 awardees and attending the event for an hour. 
  • Legendary singer Asha Bhosle was honoured with 26th PC Chandra Puraskaar for her contribution in the field of Indian music. 
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Instagram has added an In-app payments feature as a test where users can make purchases after adding a credit or debit card with an additional pin. 
    • Note : Instagram would reportedly add direct payments for things like movie tickets in the future.
  • Pension fund regulator PFRDA has announced that the National Pension System (NPS) subscribers will now have the option to partially withdraw funds for setting up new business or pursuing higher education.

  • Retirement fund body Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has launched a new service titled View Pension Passbook for pensioners on Umang App
    • This service will allow pensioners view their pension passbook on mobile phones with the help of Umang app.  
    • Note : This facility was launched part of EPFO’s plan to go paperless by August this year and provide all services online.
    • UMANG - Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance
  • In it's 27th meeting chaired by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, the GST Council has approved making GST Network (GSTN) a government entity by taking over stakes held by private entities.
  • India was ranked 11th in the FDI Confidence Index 2018 released by global consultancy firm A T Kearney. 
    • This is first time India fell out of the top 10 since 2015.
    • India's last year (2017) rank was 8th.

MOUs & Agreements
  • The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has entered into 200th Unilateral Advance Pricing Agreement (UAPA), which is aimed at promoting government's resolve of non-adversarial tax regime.
    • With the signing of one agreement in April, the total number of UAPAs entered into by the CBDT has gone up to 220, including 20 bilateral ones.
Deaths
  • Noted detective novelist” Kottayam Pushpanath (80), who expanded the world of horror fiction in Malayalam literature passed away.
    • He had written numerous mainstream novels, science and horror fiction, and translated Bram Stoker's Dracula into Malayalam. 
New Appointments
  • Former chief economic adviser Ashok Lahiri has been appointed as full-time member of the 15th Finance Commission.
    • He will be accorded the status of the Minister of State.
    • Note : He is at present the part-time member of the commission, headed by N K Singh.
  • Former IRDAI member Radhakrishnan Nair has been appointed to ICICI Bank’s board as an Additional (Independent) Director for a period of five years. 
Sports Current Affairs
  • Three-time Commonwealth gold medalist Saina Nehwal climbed two places to return into the top-10 of the Badminton World Federation women's singles rankings.
  • Indian pugilist Neeraj Goyat has been conferred with the WBC Asia Boxer of the Year Award. Neeraj is the current WBC Asia champion in welter weight category.
