Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Transition tests: Pakistan in election mode"
  • Transition - the process of changing from one situation, form, or state to another
  • Caretaker PM - a Prime Minister, who has power for a short period of time until a new one is chosen
  • Set the stage for something - to create the conditions in which something is likely to happen
  • Consecutive - following one after another in order and with nothing else in between
  • Landmark - a major event or achievement that marks an important stage in a process and makes progress possible
  • Term - a period of time during which a politician or other official holds their job
  • Tenure - the period of time during which someone has an important job or is an elected official
  • Commend - to praise someone or something formally or publicly
  • Outgoing - leaving a job
  • Contentious - causing disagreement between people or groups
  • Constitutional - relating to a set of basic laws or principles for a country that describe the rights and duties of its citizens and the way in which it is governed
  • Summon - to officially order someone to come to a place, especially a court of law
  • Contempt - a failure to show appropriate respect for something that other people consider to be important
  • Restraining order - a legal document from a judge that stops someone from doing something
  • Hold someone in good stead - to be useful or helpful to someone
  • Interim - temporary
  • Impartial - not connected to or influenced by one particular person or group
  • To begin with - used for introducing the first thing in a list of things you are going to say
  • Watchdog - a person or organization that works to stop people from doing illegal things in a particular area of business or society
  • Plenary - a plenary meeting is intended for all the people in a particular group
  • Stem from - to be caused by something
  • Extremist - someone who has beliefs or opinions that are considered to be extremely unreasonable by most people
  • Marginalise - to make someone or something seem not important or relevant
  • Disqualification - a situation in which someone is not allowed to take part in something because they have committed an offence or have done something that is not allowed by the rules
  • Campaign - a series of actions intended to produce political or social change
  • Assassination - the murder of a famous or important person, especially for political reasons
  • Crisis - an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
  • Reportedly - used for showing that you are not certain that something you are reporting is true
  • Burgeoning - growing or developing quickly
  • On account of - because of someone or something
  • Corridor - used about an area of land that belongs to one country but is surrounded by another
  • Regime - a system or form of government

  • Biofuel - fuel that is made from living things or from something their bodies produce, for example fuel made from cow manure
  • Ambition - something that you very much want to do, usually something that is difficult to achieve

  • Blend - to mix different substances together
  • Feedstock - material that is used in an industrial process
  • Sugar beet - a vegetable that grows under the ground and is used for producing sugar
  • Affordability - ability to be afforded; inexpensiveness
  • Consumers - someone who buys and uses goods and services\
  • Lag behind - to not be as successful or advanced as another person, organization, or group
  • Various - different
  • Remunerative - providing payment or other rewards for work that has been done
  • Chunk - a large amount or part of something
  • Curb - to control or limit something
  • Incentive - something that makes you want to do something or to work harder, because you know that you will benefit by doing this
  • Feasibility - the chances that something has of happening or being successful
  • Lay out - to arrange something according to a detailed plan
  • Caution - careful thought and lack of hurry in order to try to avoid risks or danger
  • Surplus - more of something than is necessary
  • Shackle - omething that prevents you from doing what you want to do
  • Definite - fixed, certain, or clear
  • Significant - very large or noticeable
  • Infrastructure - the set of systems within a place or organization that affect how well it operates
  • Inadequate - not enough, or not good enough for a particular purpose
  • Envisage - to have something as a plan or an intention
  • Refinery - a factory where things are removed from a natural substance to make it pure
  • Barrier - anything that prevents progress or makes it difficult for someone to achieve something
  • Investment - the process of spending money in order to improve something or make it more successful
  • Supply chain - a series of processes involved in supplying a product to someone
  • Potential - someone's or something's ability to develop, achieve, or succeed
  • Untapped - not being used yet, but existing in large amounts that could bring profits or benefits
