International Current Affairs

Prime Minster Narendra Modi reached Indonesia as a part of his tour to South Asia.

This is his first-ever official visit to the country.
He began his tour by laying a wreath at the Kalibata National Heroes’ Cemetery and paying homage to the martyrs of Indonesian freedom struggle.
He later met Indonesian President Joko Widodo at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta for informal discussions before holding the delegation-level talks.
Both leaders jointly inaugurated the 1st joint kite exhibition themed on India’s largest epics Ramayana and Mahabharata at the Jakarta’s National Monument.
About Indonesia :

The Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMO) of India and Pakistan today agreed to fully implement the ceasefire understanding of 2003 in letter and in spirit.

They further agreed to ensure that the agreement is not violated by either side from now on.

The 71st World Health Assembly held in Geneva, Switzerland in Geneva and was attended by delegations from all WHO member states.

The assembly has adopted resolution on Digital Health, which was initiated by India and was co-sponsored by 20 countries.
This resolution recognises huge potential of Digital health technology for supporting Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and improving accessibility, quality and affordability of health services.

National Current Affairs

Today is Hindi Journalism Day.
- On this day in the year 1826, the first Hindi newspaper of India called Udant Martand (The Rising Sun) was edited and published.
- With this, the Hindi Journalism completed its 187 years in India.
Goa is celebrating its 31st Statehood Day today.

It was on this day in 1987 that Goa became the 25th state of India.
It was a Union Territory along with Daman and Diu from December 1961 onwards when Goa was liberated from the colonial rule.

MOUs & Agreements

India and Indonesia signed 15 Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) in the fields of defence, scientific and technological cooperation, railways and health, among others during PM Narendra Modi's visit to the nation.

PM Modi and Indonesian President Joko Widodo in a joint statement also agreed to develop further cooperation in maritime sector for "immense stability" in the region.

India has signed a loan agreement with the world bank for 21.7 million dollars for strengthening the public financial management in Rajasthan project.

The project size is approximately 31 million dollars, of which 21.7 million dollars will be financed by the World Bank, and remaining amount will be funded out of the state budget. The project duration is 5 years.
Aim of this Project : To improve budget execution, enhanced accountability and greater efficiency in revenue administration in Rajasthan.

The Union Ministry of Women and Child and Development (WCD) has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Uttar Pradesh Government for management of Home of Widows at Sunrakh Bangar, Vrindavan.

Awards & Honors

Indian botanist Kamaljit Bawa received the Linnean Medal 2018 for his pioneering research on evolution of tropical plants, tropical deforestation & non-timber forest products. .

Bawa is the 1st Indian to win the award ever since it was constituted in 1888.
Note : The Linnean Award is awarded annually to alternately a botanist or a zoologist.

HDFC Bank Managing Director Aditya Puri is the only Indian to feature in the 'World's Best CEOs' list by financial magazine Barron's.

Note : Puri, who has been the bank's MD since its inception in 1994, has featured on the list for 4th consecutive year.

Banking, Business & Economic Affairs

The government has decided to extend ₹1 lakh to retired Presidents and ₹90,000 to retired Vice Presidents towards actual charges incurred as office expenses annually.

Note : Recently, the monthly salaries of the President and Vice President were increased to ₹5 lakh and ₹4 lakh.

The Defence Acquisition Council headed by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has approved the purchase of military equipment worth ₹6,900 crore.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) today banned the import of fresh fruits and vegetables from Kerala following the outbreak of the Nipah virus.

The Union Power Minister R K Singh has launched a web portal and App titled PRAAPTI to bring transparency in power payments to generators at a function in New Delhi.

The webportal and app aims to bring transparency in power purchase transactions between Generators and Discoms.
PRAAPTI - Payment Ratification and Analysis in Power procurement for bringing Transparency in Invoicing of generators.

New Appointments

Prof Ganeshi Lal was sworn in as the Governor of Odisha at Raj Bhavan in Bhubaneswar.

Ridesharing company Uber has promoted its India head Amit Jain as regional general manager for Asia Pacific region (APAC).
Former International Monetary Fund official Carlo Cottarelli has been appointed as the Interim Prime Minister of Italy.
Senior diplomat Pankaj Saran has been appointed as the Deputy National Security Advisor (NSA).

Saran is currently India's Ambassador to Russia.
In his new role, he will assist NSA Ajit Doval along with Rajinder Khanna who was appointed as Deputy NSA in January 2018
