International Current Affairs
  • Today (2nd Sunday of May) is Mother's Day
    • Mother's Day is a celebration honoring the mother of the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society.
  • The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Tourism Ministers’ conference was held in Wuhan, China.
    • It was 1st meeting of SCO tourism ministers since the organization was established in 2001 in Shanghai. 
    • K. J. Alphons, Minister of State (Independent Charge) has represented India in the meeting.
    • The meeting approved a joint action plan, which specifies cooperation among national tourism administrations, as well as measures member states could take to improve tourist experience and safety, develop tourist products and promote smart tourism.
  • Iraq voted in its 1st Parliamentary election since declaring victory over the Islamic State group.
    • About 7,000 candidates from dozens of political alliances are vying for 329 parliamentary seats.
    • The vote was conducted electronically for the first time in an effort to reduce fraud.
    • The results are expected within 48 hours of polling offices closing.
  • During the 2 day visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Nepal, both countries agreed to expand their partnership for socio-economic development on the basis of principles of equality, trust, respect and mutual benefit.
    • In a joint statement issued by Mr Modi and his Nepalese counterpart KP Sharma Oli emphasised the need for regular convening of bilateral mechanisms to review the overall state of bilateral relations and for expeditious implementation of the economic and development co-operation projects.
    • The two Prime Ministers also underscored the importance of trade and economic ties between India and Nepal.
National Current Affairs
  • Supreme Court has approved the 'Compensation Scheme for Women Victims, Survivors of Sexual Assault, Other Crimes-2018'.
    • According to this scheme, a victim of gangrape in any part of the country would now get a minimum compensation of Rs five lakh up to a maximum of Rs 10 lakh.
    • The scheme also provides compensation in cases of acid attacks.
  • Ministry of Tourism has decided to expand Buddhist tourism circuit under Swadesh Darshan Scheme to 21 more states to make it India’s first trans-national tourist circuit.
    • The new states includes Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Kerala, West Bengal, Goa, Gujarat and Jammu & Kashmir.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has put state-run lender has barred the state run lender Dena Bank from extending fresh credit in view of deteriorating financial health due to mounting Non-Performing Assets (NPAs). 
    • In addition, the lender has also been barred from recruiting staff.
    • Note : With this Dena Bank became the first lender to face curbs on lending under PCA framework.
    • With this, Dena bank can disburse loans for credit facilities already sanctioned, but cannot sanction fresh loans.
New Appointments
  • The finance ministry today announced that the senior bureaucrat Lok Ranjan will continue to serve on the board of ICICI Bank as Independent director despite his transfer to the personnel ministry.
    • Note : Yesterday the government transferred Ranjan, joint secretary in Department of Financial Services to Department of Personnel and Training, leading to speculation that he would no longer be on the board of ICICI Bank.
Science & Technology
  • Scientists have discovered world’s second oldest grain of Magmatic Zircon (a mineral that contains traces of radioactive isotopes) from Champua from Singhbhum rock sample in Odisha’s Kendujhar district. 
    • It is an estimated 4,240 million years old, making it world’s second oldest rock ever to be discovered.  
  • The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) today announced that it is going to launch the 1st-ever helicopter to Mars in 2020, a miniature, unmanned drone-like chopper that could boost our understanding of the Red Planet.
    • Known simply as "The Mars Helicopter," the device weighs less than four pounds (1.8 kilograms), and its main body section, or fuselage, is about the size of a softball.
    • Note : No nation has ever flown a helicopter on Mars before.
  • The US government has cancelled NASA’s Carbon Monitoring System (CMS) programme citing reasons of budget constraints and higher priorities within science budget. I
  • Bangladesh’s first communication satellite Bangabandhu-1 was launched by SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket from Kennedy Space Center Launch Complex 39A. 
    • Bangabandhu - 1 is designed to provide wide range of broadcast and communication services throughout Bangladesh.
    • It is named after Bangladesh’s “Father of the Nation”- Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

  • Indian Women's Hockey team beat Japan, 4-1 in their opening game of Asian Champions Trophy at South Korea.
    • Important Details about Asian Hockey Champions Trophy
    • This is a sport event conducted by the Asian Hockey Federation from the year 2011.
    • Pakistan and India are the most successful teams in Asian Hockey Champions (2 titles each).
    • Most recent champion is India.
    • The 2018 Asian Champions Trophy is being held at Donghae City, South Korea from 13th to 20th May 2018.
