International Current Affairs
  • Today (12th May) is International Nurses Day.
    • Florence Nightingale, founder of modern nursing, was born on this day in the year 1820 and hence this day is celebrated as International Nurses Day all over the world to mark the contributions nurses make to society.
    • Theme of International Nurses Day 2018 : “Nurses A Voice to Lead – Health is a Human right
  • Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi is on a 2 day visit to Nepal at the invitation of Nepalese Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli.
    • During this visit, Narendra Modi and his Nepalese counterpart KP Sharma Oli flagged off Indo-Nepal bus service
    • The buses will ply from Janakpur, the birthplace of Sita, to Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh. 
  • Netherlands Prime Minister Mark Rutte will be on a two-day visit to India on 24-25 May 2018.
    • This will be Rutte's second visit to India since June 2015, but the first after being re-elected as prime minister in 2017.
    • His visit with four cabinet ministers, 15 CEOs and about 220 participants in the business delegation, is the biggest Dutch trade mission to India ever and will further strengthen the relations in agriculture, smart cities, water management, health and R&D.
    • Note : Rutte's visit comes within a year of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the Netherlands last June.
Awards & Honors
  • Nobel laureate and noted economist Muhammad Yunus was honoured with the 11th KISS Humanitarian Award 2018.
    • Yunus is the founder of Grameen Bank and known as the Father of Microfinance.
    • He was co-awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 along with Grameen Bank - the microcredit organisation he created to provide loans to the poor in Bangladesh.
  • Leading vaccine maker Bharat Biotech has received the National Technology Award 2018 from the Central government's Technology Development Board for its Rotavac vaccine.
    • Launched in 2015 Rotavac was introduced into the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP) in India during 2016, with initial implementation in 9 states.
    • Till date, Bharat Biotech has supplied about 35 million doses to the UIP.
Recent Committees in News
  • A parliamentary panel headed by veteran BJP leader Murali Manohar Joshi is going to study the recovery of black money and performance of public sector banks among a host of subjects.
    • As per the memorandum of the committee, the panel will look into the import of uranium for nuclear plants, mining activities and environment, upgrading of India Post offices and the drought situation in the country among other matters.
MOUs & Agreements
  • India and Peru signed an agreement in the field of Renewable Energy at Lima.
    • The pact was signed in the presence of Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and the Prime Minister of Lema, Cesar Villanueva Arevalo.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • American multinational technology company Apple and multinational investment bank Goldman Sachs are teaming up for a new Credit card which could be released in 2019.
    • The card will be branded with Apple Pay, the technology giant's mobile payment and digital wallet platform.
    • Aim of Apple Pay-branded Card : To expand Apple’s mobile payments and also help Goldman Sachs expand into consumer banking.
Books & Authors
  • Chief of Army Staff General Bipin Rawat, today released a book titled ‘Across the Bench – Insight into the Indian Military Judicial System’.
    • This book has been authored by Lt Gen Gyan Bhushan, former Army Commander and Member ‘A’, Armed Forces Tribunal, Lucknow Bench.
    • The book deals with military judicial system vis-a-vis command and management issues within the military establishments besides the whole gamut of issues relating to veterans, their families and dependents.
Sports Current Affairs
  • The Cricket Association for the Blind in India is planning to conduct a T20 League for blind cricketers, similar to the Indian Premier League, between mid-November and mid-December. 
    • Shah Rukh Khan, who owns the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise in the IPL, has expressed his interest in owning a team in the blind cricket league.
  • Spanish professional tennis player, Rafael Nadal broke John McEnroe’s 34-year record by winning his 50th consecutive set on clay at the Madrid Open
