International Current Affairs
  • Today (29th April) is International Dance Day / World Dance Day.
    • The day was introduced in 1982 by the International Dance Committee of the UNESCO International Theatre Institute.
    • The date was chosen to commemorate the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, who was born in 1727, a French dancer and ballet master and a great reformer of dance. 
  • Today is the "Day of Remembrance for all Victims of Chemical Warfare".
    • This day is officially recognised by the United Nations (UN) and has been celebrated since 2005.
  • North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has said he will change the country's clocks 30 minutes forward to unify with South Korea's time zone
    • Note : North Korea had put back its clocks by 30 minutes in 2015.
  • Zimbabwe has become the 2nd African nation to legalise the production of cannabis for medicinal or scientific purposes.
    • Prior to its legalisation, production or possession of cannabis in Zimbabwe was punishable by up to 12 years in prison.
    • Note : Lesotho Becomes First African Country to Legalize Marijuana for medicinal purposes on 20th September 2017.
National Current Affairs
  • Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling today became the longest-serving Chief Minister in India, surpassing the record of Jyoti Basu, who served as West Bengal CM from 1977 to 2000. 
    • Chamling, who belongs to the Sikkim Democratic Front, became the Chief Minister in December 1994.
  • The Kerala State Human Rights Commission issued a directive to the regional office of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to add a warning as violence against women is a punishable offence.
    • Malayalam films will be displaying a statutory warning while showing scenes that depict violence against women. 
  • The Women and Child Development Ministry has today announced that the government is preparing a draft Cabinet Note to amend the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and make it gender-neutral
    • It has also proposed making death sentence for raping minors gender-neutral. 
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Paytm has launched a payment mode titled Paytm Tap Card in pilot mode in Chennai.
    • This card uses Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. 
    • With this a user can scan the QR code on the card to transfer money from Paytm wallet without the need of internet connection. 
    • Paytm has claimed that the Tap Card is India's first "truly offline payments solution".
  • The Directorate General of Goods and Services Tax Intelligence (DGGST) issued show cause notices to India’s top banks including State Bank of India (SBI), ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Axis Bank, demanding them to pay service tax, penalties and interests on the free services provided to their customers.
    • The tax will be levied on the services provided to minimum balance account holders for the last five years, including the pre-GST era for which the previous service tax cases can be opened. 
  • Pakistan Finance Minister Miftah Ismail today allocated $9.6 billion (nearly ₹64,000 crore) for Defence in the 2018-19 fiscal.
    • This is an 18% increase from the last fiscal. 
New Appointments
  • World's largest oil producer, Saudi Aramco, has appointed Lynn Laverty Elsenhans as its Director.
    • With this Elsenhans will become the 1st -ever female director of the organization. 
Sports Current Affairs
  • For the 1st time, the Afghanistan cricket board is going to conduct T20 league during 5th to 24th October 2018 in Sharjah.
    • Reportedly, it ahs already requested BCCI to allow Indian players to feature in this T20 league.
    • Note : The BCCI currently does not allow Indian players to play in any foreign T20 leagues. 
  • The Indian contingent finished the Belgrade International Boxing Tournament with a total of 13 medals (3 Gold medals, 5 Silver medals, and 5 Bronze medals).

      • Himanshu Sharma (49 kg category) 
      • Nikhat Zareen (51 kg category)
  • World number one and 16-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal has won his 44th consecutive set on clay and registered his 400th win on the surface. 
    • Nadal achieved the feat by defeating world number 10 David Goffin in the Barcelona Open semi-final. 
  • The Commonwealth Games Federation today confirmed that Shooting will not be a part of the CWG 2022.
    • Important Note : India won 16 medals in Shooting at the Commonwealth Games 2018.
