International Current Affairs
- North Korean leader Kim Jong-un today became the 1st country leader to cross the demilitarised zone and enter the South Korean territory since the end of the Korean War.
- Jong-un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in are expected to discuss denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula, seek a formal peace settlement, and improve relations between the two countries.
- Important Note : North and South Korea have agreed to sign a peace treaty to end the 65-year-long Korean war.
- Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj were the only lady ministers who attended the 8-member Shanghai Cooperation Organisation's defence and foreign ministers' meetings this week.
- US Defense Secretary James Mattis today announced that the country will expand its military operation in Syria amid the increase in Islamic State offensives in the region.
National Current Affairs
- PM Narendra Modi launched the Van Dhan Scheme of Ministry of Tribal Affairs and TRIFED at Bijapur, Chattisgarh.
- Aim of Van Dhan Scheme : To provide skill upgradation and capacity building training and setting up of primary processing and value addition facility.
- Under Van Dhan, 10 Self Help Groups of 30 Tribal gatherers is constituted.
- They are then trained and provided with working capital to add value to the products, which they collect from the jungle.
- It is proposed to develop 30,000 such centres in the country.
- Marking a formal split in Bihar CM Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal (United), rebel Sharad Yadav's supporters today launched a new political party named Loktantrik Janata Dal (LJD).
- Former India football captain Bhaichung Bhutia launched his political party 'Hamro Sikkim Party'.
- Bhutia had entered politics by joining Trinamool Congress in 2013 and resigned from the Mamata Banerjee-led party in February this year.
- The HRD ministry launched the second edition of the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan under which students from 750 higher educational institutions from across the country will adopt villages and visit them to get acquainted with lifestyle of people there and the problems faced by them.
- The 23rd meeting of Western Zonal Council was recently held at Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
- The meeting was attended by chief ministers of Maharashtra and Gujarat, ministers of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, administrator of UTs of Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli and senior officers from Central and state governments.
- This meeting was chaired by Rajnath Singh (Union home minister).
Science & Technology
- The Bhabha Atomic Reseach Centre (BARC) has developed a lightweight, cheaper bulletproof jacket of next-generation, titled Bhabha Kavach.
- Named after Dr. Homi J. Bhabha (father of Indian nuclear programme), the jacket was developed as per the request from Ministry of Home Affairs and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
New Appointments
- Senior lawyer Indu Malhotra was today sworn in as a judge of the Supreme Court in the presence of Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra.
- With this, Malhotra has now become the first woman lawyer to be directly appointed as a Supreme Court judge.
- The Congress today appointed veteran party leader Kamal Nath as its Madhya Pradesh unit chief, while Lok Sabha chief whip Jyotiraditya Scindia will head the campaign committee for Assembly elections.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- In a bid to grow its deposits, HDFC Bank has hiked interest rates on term deposits by up to 100 basis points (1 percentage point).
- Following the increase, the bank is offering a flat return of 7per cent on all maturities of over one year, while senior citizens can earn up to 7.5 per cent and bulk depositors (Rs 1 crore and above) get even more.
- Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has granted First Licence to Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Ltd for Liquid Chlorine on all India basis as per Indian Standard (IS) 646:1986.
- This is the First Licence granted on All India basis.
- The licence has been made operative with effect from April 2018 for a period of one year.
Awards & Honors
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi has released a commemorative postage stamp on former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Late Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna.
- Modi described Bahuguna as a leader committed to democratic values.
Sports Current Affairs
- The International Cricket Council (ICC) today announced that it will hold a World T20 instead of the Champions Trophy in India in 2021.
- The 2021 World T20 will follow the 2020 edition in Australia, marking only the second time that two World T20 tournaments will take place in successive years.
- The 2021 World T20 will be a 16-team event.
- Note : The ICC also confirmed that all of its 104 member countries will receive T20 International status.
Careers
- The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has declared the results for the Civil Service Examinations (CSE) 2017 that was held in the month of June last year.
- Durishetty Anudeep from Hyderabad (Telangana) topped the UPSC Civil Services examination.
